Comillas is a small township and municipality in the northern reaches of Spain, in the autonomous community of Cantabria. The Marquisate of Comillas, a fiefdom of Spanish nobility, holds ceremonial office in the seat of power at a small castle which overlooks the town. The Comillas Pontifical University was housed here before it moved to Madrid, and the old university buildings are among the finest examples of architecture in the town. Besides this, there are many notable medieval and baroque buildings.

A little hidden in the small town of Novales is this little "posada" or small hotel. I only go to the restaurant though and have never stayed there. It's a seemingly humble place but the quality of the food is excellent. The low temperature cooked rib is a must if available. Novales is a town known for its lemons so you have to try the lemon mousse made with the local lemons .

We saw this intriguing English/African Colonial restaurant from the Tourist Train in the lovely town of Comillas. The setting in the bar is cool, it's just the staff and food were just typically Spanish. I think we expected more. No complaints though. They had a high chair which we always require. Little play area too for small kids.

Restaurante Filipinas

Many restaurants seemed to be closed for vacation while we were visiting Spain in October. I guess this is when they take a break after the busy summer/early fall season. We went to 2 other restaurants before finding Restaurante Filipinas open and serving dinner. We were fairly early, 7:00 PM, and there weren't many diners, but some locals at the bar. The menu is only in Spanish, but one of our group was fluent and I can navigate a menu. It is very unpretentious and casual, with a warm local vibe. The waitress was friendly and patient with us while we looked over the fairly extensive menu. I settled on Arroz a la Cuba (rice with a sweetish, but pleasant, red sauce and fried eggs) and chile rellanos with beef. Both enough to share. And both very good. My husband and our 2 friends ordered chicken soup, which was served family style, so we all had some. Our friends also ordered fried calamari and a beautiful, large salad with a variety of vegetables and tuna. We had a bottle of well priced local wine. All the food was reasonable and there was plenty of it! By the time we finished our meal the restaurant had filled mostly with locals and families. I would definitely dine at this restaurant again.

We were really looking forward to trying this restaurant but after 30 minutes of being ignored by the waiting staff we decided to leave. The Spanish get preferential service so if you are an English family be prepared to wait or eat elsewhere where you will be treated with some level of basic respect.

After beach life, many people gather in the lovely square of the city for wining and dining. The elevated terrace of terrazuca offers stunning views on the events in the square. Terrazuca also offers a more modern dining amidst high tourist oriented traditional restaurants. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant reflects that 'young' atmosphere just as well as the surprising and delicious tapas served.

Premium service, great quality product in an uncomparable atmosphere. Must visit if you are in comillas. Among my favourite are: Rabas de calamar, entrecote de vaca Tudanca (local cow with extremely tasty meat), ensaladilla rusa and cheesecake with caramel for desert. Will come back to try pastrami sandwich and the burger. If you go for dinner, the place is ideal for a drink after dinner. Location, service, product and price make Gilda a great choice when in Comillas.

This restaurant is a little out of the way but the location and ambiance is amazing and worth the visit despite the really bad service. We were a group of 4 adults and 4 kids and luckily we had some snacks before arriving because after being seated it took them nearly 30minutes just to give us the menus. The slow start was clearly an indication of the slow service that we were about to receive. Although the food was not bad, by the time it arrived at our table it was completely cold. Service was so slow that in the end we let the kids get up to play and then 30min later we called them back for their main courses. Such a disappointment. I got the feeling that they are not used to having more than 2 tables to serve.

Although a language barrier, on our first visit we managed, using both U.K. and Spanish menus, to order and get more or less what we wanted (I was not able to find, on the English menu, the pizza with anchovy and olives that I was convinced I’d translated on the Spanish menu, so ordered something else). Our waiter spoke enough English and with my very limited Spanish, we managed. However, on our second visit, about a week later, we were served by someone who honestly didn’t even seem to understand their Spanish menu, let alone the UK one, even though they were laid out in identical manner. So we ordered the mixed salad to share as a starter followed by a pizza, an entrecôte with pepper and an escalope Milanese. Confusion over the bottle of water we ordered, everywhere else has understood my “Agua con gas” but no, it took several minutes to eventually get a large bottle of water WITHOUT gas (con gas only came in small bottles). A further wait then two pizzas arrived, one was the one we had ordered and the other was a Naplalese one, which the waiter had decided we wanted instead of the escalope. This turned out to be the anchovy pizza I had wanted the week before! Then the mixed salad arrived, I unsuccessfully tried to explain we had wanted that as a shared starter, so gave up, but it looked as though the salad was being served instead of the steak, I realised that no one had asked how the steak should be cooked so thought they hadn’t got that right either. Eventually though, the steak arrived. A large one but far too over cooked for me, so I swapped and had the anchovy pizza and my husband ate the steak, which he said was tasty but medium to well done (we would have ordered it rare, had we been asked). Now, I know we had a language issue but the waiter was seen to ask the other waiter, who had served us the week before, for some help but was just sent away. I also asked for a Spanish menu so I could show what we wanted on that but although he fetched one, he looked at it himself and put it on another table. Very frustrating and I was left feeling they just couldn’t care less. Even when asking for the bill, in Spanish, the waiter nodded then we were ignored and had to ask again 10 mins later as he stood by the kitchen, not even appearing to remember we had asked for it. So, food was good but not what we had ordered, we felt the staff couldn’t be bothered to try to serve us, not even checking how we liked the steak... pity we went back because it might have got one more point based on our first visit only.

Wonderful service from the owner(?) who explained all the dishes in English, even offering to serve half portions so that we could try more dishes. The Zamburinas (Scallops) were the highlight. We shared a portion of Hake for main course, it was plenty for two and was served with chips & salad and was excellent. I'd recommend ordering one of the more expensive wines as the cheaper Albarino wasn't to our taste, but the lady couldn't have been more helpful in replacing it with different bottle. A must-go in lovely Comillas.

My sweetheart and I were spending 4 days in Cantabria, along with my mother-in-law (who is a very cool and dedicated traveler). We had been up in Picos de Europa enjoying the cool of the mountains and some great hiking. On our last day, we headed down the mountain, in part to be closer to the airport for our morning departure and (importantly) to see El Capricho de Gaudí, the beautiful mansion. So, a day of beauty and harmony required a lunch to match. La Aldea Comillas really satisfied that need and left us quite content and smiling (and full!).The restaurant is on a side street packed with other restaurants. When you travel, and see a whole line of restaurants in a row, it's hard to tell the tourist traps from the real thing. Fortunately, we did our research and found this place. There is outside seating and a nice larger room upstairs. As they don't take reservations, if you want an outside seat, you'll probably have to arrive early. We didn't arrive until 3pm, so ended up inside (which was nice, so no complaints). My sweetheart and I really wanted fish. My mother-in-law wanted beef and got a nice steak from local meat.
