This is a friendly, relatively small French restaurant that focuses on providing very well-prepared, tasty and attractively presented meals. The restaurant is set by the banks of the Loire and in good weather it is possible to enjoy a meal sitting on their terrace overlooking the river. There is street parking opposite the restaurant and, when the river is not in full flow, there is ample parking immediately adjacent on a slipway. The ambience is not over-formal and it is a relaxing place to dine: if you are looking for âchicâ and prices that go with more sumptuous surroundings, then look elsewhere. That said, the lay-out within the restaurant is smart and comfortable, with tables and seating providing plenty enough space; and our visit was on a Friday evening in high season when the restaurant was fully booked. All the other diners were French (a good sign) and it was clear that night that the restaurant was happy to cater also for well-behaved children that did not upset the relaxed dining ambience. The waiters were very welcoming, attentive and pleasant, and appeared to relish being asked about the individual dishes on the menu. There was also a very good wine list, including a good choice of not over-priced wines. As with many French restaurants, there is a good selection of differently priced, set meals on the menu or, of course, you can choose each course independently from the Carte. On offer were a number of locally-inspired fish dishes from the Loire, as well as a selection of excitingly prepared âalternativeâ meat courses. Vegetarians are also catered for with at least two main course dishes but I would still check when booking a table. Between the four of us in our party, we tasted and tested a good selection of the dishes on offer. I can honestly say that every one of the four courses we each had was deemed to be excellent, in terms of presentation but particularly also for overall taste. We also opted to have a sorbet between the starter and the main course, which on the night in question was grapefruit with gin which perhaps sounds a bit different, but which I thoroughly recommend! We left the restaurant that evening feeling thoroughly satisfied in terms of the quality of the meals we enjoyed, the service and overall value-for-money. Highly recommended if you are staying in or near Varades.

It is some eighteen months since some friends introduced us to this excellent restaurant and our recent visit confirmed the high opinion we formed then.We were eating from the 'Menu du Jour', a bargain at under twenty euros and which had two imaginative choices on each of the three courses. My starter of smoked pigeon breast was well flavoured, but appreciative noises from my fellow diners suggested that the alternative chicken dish with new season local asparagus would have been equally acceptable. My main course choice of loin of cod was beautifully cooked and the bottle of Alsace Pinot Noir - a very light version of this Burgundian grape - was a surprisingly good accompaniment. An interesting and delicious desert of strawberries, that included on the plate a coulis of beetroot, was an inspired creation by the chef.We will return.

This is the second time that we have eaten in this restaurant and it has been excellent on both occasions. The Guinea fowl was done to perfection and my husband's fish was also beautifully cooked. I went with 8 friends, and we all agreed that the food, presentation and wine selection was excellent. A starter enjoyed by some was the Camembert fondue. The steak was large and tasty, quail was delicious, the local river fish, too. The restaurant does not have outdoor seating, and it can handle quite a few people inside. Prices were fair.... the main plates mentioned above averaged about $20-$30 US. The proprietor spoke excellent English!

Seated in the sun at a table overlooking the river, crisp napkin, kir cremant in hand, feeling perfectly happy. You need to try your French no matter how weak it is and criticism of their inability to speak English are unfounded. Three courses of excellent food for 29 euros, a bottle of Loire rose for 14 more. We took our time and felt very well looked after.
