Reviews on Eastern European food in Cesis, Vidzeme Region, Latvia. Cēsis (Latvian pronunciation: [tseːsis] ( listen)), (German: Wenden, Livonian: Venden, Estonian: Võnnu, Polish: Kieś) is a town in Latvia located in the northern part of the Central Vidzeme Upland. Cēsis is on the Gauja River valley, and is built on a series of ridges above the river overlooking the woods below. Cēsis was one of the candidate cities for the title of European Capital of Culture 2014 (Riga was the Latvian city that won the title).

Most restaurants in the center of Cesis were overcrowded and we decided to try this one. It was a good idea indeed. Their beef cooked in beer with white mushroom sauce is really good. The place is good for big groups with kids and etc. I'd say it's a perfect example of the small restaurant for families with kids.
On the top floor of the concert hall âCÄsisâ you can find restaurant âEpikÅ«ra dÄrzsâ. Our guests are welcome to enjoy delicious meals, variety of the snacks and desserts. All that by having a spectacular view over the town of Cesis.
"EpikÅ«ra DÄrzs" is located on the 6th floor of the "Vidzeme Concert Hall" building, what gives a wonderful possibility to see the CÄsis town from a different and scenic point of view. I got a chance to visit this place for a lunch. I took the daily lunch offer, which offered the choice between starter or soup and the main-course. I was really surprised about the quality and the taste of the prepared dishes. I had a feeling of having a'la carte dishes, which made me really satisfied. Food was prepared with high attitude!

My girlfriend and I made a snowy daytrip up to Cesis from Riga back in January, in the heart of Latvijan winter weather. After getting off the train and a brisk 10-or-so minute walk through the ankle-deep snow, our first stop was lunch in Aroma Cafe. Her mother had recommended this place to us, as she visits Cesis infrequently and usually makes this place her lunch stop as well. It's more a traditional "cafe" cafe, than a Riga kafejnica which doubles as a bar. They had no daily special dishes, which is unusual for a cafe in Latvija, but a sizeable regular main menu that consisted mostly of the usual meat dishes with potato and salad side options. Prices were reasonable, normal Latvijan lunch menu fare.I settled for one of the marinaded pork dishes, whilst my girlfriend went for a chicken mushroom dish if I remember correctly. The cafe was not particularly busy when we ordered, and it arrived relatively soonish - after maybe a fifteen minute wait which we spent warming up with some delicious homemade gluhwein. The dishes were sizeable when they arrived, but it was noticeable that around 70% of the plate was made up by the pretty enormous salad. It was tasty, but the biggest thing on the plate by far. The side dip was good enough, but basic; it wouldn't be too hard for them to make better. My side of mashed potatoes was delicious, and my girlfriend's fried potatoes were also well done.As for the main meat part of the dishes, I think my girlfriend enjoyed hers more than I enjoyed mine. She had nothing but good things to say about her dish, but then she had been there before (and is native Latvian so knows the dishes better). My pork was too fatty - at least half the dish was made up of fat, with the rest of the meat being still tasty, even though there was not much there. I know Latvijans usually seem to like their meat really fatty, but for me it ruins the dish. So perhaps this was just a bad order on my half. I would happily go back, but order something different next time.
Kafejnica Pagrabins is located in the basement of hotel Cesis and has a small terrace by the side of the hotel. Food options are essentially Latvian presented in a cafetaria style. It should be noted that they also offer pretty decent and very reasonably priced pizzas. A crust a little different from what you would get in Napoli but quite good nevertheless and generous toppings. Overall, nothing fancy but enjoyable.
