How did I not know about this place growing up in the city next to Hayward! My mom said she used to have my dad go get Val Hamburgers when she was pregnant with me. Cravings! Well, I have grown children now, and this is the first i had heard of this place from her! She wanted to take my grown son here as he likes hamburgers. All I can say is they were absolutely awesome hamburgers! i got the mama burger and it was plenty big. The papa was 2 BIG patties and it was very large I split a strawberry shake with my son and I don't even like strawberry shakes.... I'm a vanilla person.... but this strawberry shake was very good! Fries are the big steak fries and they were good too, but I do enjoy skinnier fries better, but the fries were still good. Impressive place, loved the history and all the employees we came in contact with were so nice. When I find myself in the bay area again, I'd definitely come back! In fact, looking forward to that.
I always go to Nick's whenever I have a craving for steak, or a huge breakfast... Being open 24 hours helps, when I'm coming back home or getting an early headstart to the day. They have a huge (probably over 1 lb. rib eye steak) steak special with two large sides, and their breakfast menu is extensive with omelets, three egg breakfasts, huge waffles and other traditional breakfast fare to satisfy all appetites. Service is good, coffee is excellent, and desserts are freshly made on site. It's hard to find a good diner nowadays in California, and this one hits the spot!

I was pretty excited to get a Mels Diner in town. Ordered the cheese burger with bacon. The burger was delivered with the requisite melted cheese and bacon, but the patty was so overcooked and dry that there really was no reason to eat it. There was a dollup of thousand island dressing, which was the only moisture in the burger. The atmosphere is great; the service is mediocre (the waitress never did ask us how we wanted the burger cooked, which makes me think the patties are pre-cooked and heated in the microwave when ordered. The patties are that dry. It was pretty surprising that our bill, for a burger and an iced tea was 20.00 (including tip). I will skip this place in the future. You can get a better burger at Habit for less than half the price. Too bad, it's a very cute little place.
