Every once in a while you stumble on a gem of a diner. This is the case with Yetter's Diner in Sussex, NJ, just minutes from the Fiargrounds that hosts the NJ State Fair. The staff is warm and welcoming and the food, my of my, the food. A full meal from s
I really wasn't expecting much, it's main attraction was it's proximity to Old Lafayette Village, a quaint shopping area nearby. But I ordered the Cobb salad and it arrived WITHOUT chicken. I asked the waitress where the chicken was, and she replied, you could add grilled chicken on. I looked at her, perplexed, but realized my beef was with the cook, not her. She asked if I wanted chicken, and I, still stunned, said Yes! It came quickly, but I thought I'd entered the twilight zone somehow. I checked my phone to see if the planets had shifted and I was wrong about the BASIC ingrédients for a cobb salad, but no, every authority on the topic seemed to know that chicken was what the Cobb salad was built on, not an "option" but "core" to the whole Cobb experience. I gave one last stab at righting their ship as I paid the bill, telling the cashier I wanted the "chef" to know that chicken is PART of a cobb salad, to which she replied, you can add chicken, it's an option on the menu. Brother!!!

We are running kind of late but we need to get something to eat so we stopped at the airport diner. Order was put in and it was kind of fast and easy and the food was excellent. Service was great having you recommend this small diner.

Yetter's is a diner that has been a staple in the area for a long, long time. Some excellent dishes on their standard menu are their hot open turkey platter, and their kabob platter dishes. Among the specials, Yetters serves an excellent liver Viennese, and the best chicken pot pie in the county, if you get lucky. The minuses: (1) For a region that prides itself on its nearby farmland, it's shocking how bland, boring, oversweetened with sauce, and/or inedible almost every vegetable side is on this menu. (2) When fresh, the desserts can be very good - but some are left out too long. (3) The air conditioning is set way too cold, and can make for a really unpleasant dining experience. (4) Fox News, always on TV - we've chosen different restaurant some nights, simply because we didn't want to see or hear that news station with our meal. The current wait staff is friendly, even remembers some of our drink and dining preferences from previous visits. (That being said, we really do miss Leslie, an outstanding waitress who has vanished without a trace. She was so good we often came to eat at Yetter's just to hang out and talk with her a bit.) Yetter's was great when the majority of their entrees were $15 - now we're creeping up to $18 on the kabobs, and a dinner for two with tax and tip is averaging $35-40. But it's good, it's convenient, and if you're passing through along Route 206, it's worth a visit.

We stopped in for a late lunch (around 2-3 pm) on the Saturday before Christmas and though it was crowded, were seated immediately. My wife chose the short stack of Chocolate Chip Pancakes, while I enjoyed their Ruben sandwich with fries. Both were delicious and quite the meal (large portions) and not expensive . The staff was friendly and courteous thus completing a nice meal. We will return.
