If you have time for a detour while visiting Braunschweig in Northern Germany, check out Café Winuwuk in the Harz Mountains (they have a website with the very unusual history of the café which dates back to the thirties). There is usually a fire crackling in the fireside and the cakes are out of this world! Very friendly waitresses.Except of Sundays there is a craft workshop which sells beautiful wooden art (I started my collection of small wooden boxes in 1967 at the Winuwuk and these days I have a hard time finding more small wooden boxes), no kitsch for sure.Check out the opening times of the craft store as it doesn not open before afternoon and is not open every day.The houses look like big mushrooms right out of some fairytale...

We have been wanting to try the pizza at Allegro for some time and finally made it. Warning, the café is very small so you may want to make reservations. At 3PM on a Saturday we had to wait a bit for a table. My wife ordered a gemischte (mixed) and I ordered a scharfe (spicy), and they were delivered quickly. The pizza here comes on a lavosh-like crust which was excellent. (I have had it before in the States, but this was my wife's first experience, and I think she was quite impressed.) Both pizzas were flavorful and satisfying. Personally, I think the sauce makes the pizza, and honestly good sauce can be hard to find in Europe, but Allegro nails it. My scharfe had hot salami, peperoni and lots of jalapeno peppers. I like spicy food, and this did not disappoint. I tasted my wife's as well, and it was delicious as well, with ham, salami and mushrooms. My wife ordered the special of the day after dinner, a cappuccino and a homemade slice of cake, her choice was a mandarin cheesecake. Of course I had to help her and it was wonderful. My only complaint would be that it took some time to get a fresh drink, and the check was hard to come by, but my wife keeps assuring me that this is just a very German thing, and it wasn't a big enough deal to change my rating. We will be going back to explore the menu further.
