Find out what Deli restaurants to try in Schenectady. Schenectady /skəˈnɛktədi/ is a city in Schenectady County, New York, United States, of which it is the county seat. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 66,135. The name "Schenectady" is derived from a Mohawk word skahnéhtati meaning "beyond the pines". The city was founded on the south side of the Mohawk River by Dutch colonists in the 17th century, many from the Albany area. They were prohibited from the fur trade by the Albany monopoly, which kept its control after the English takeover in 1664. Residents of the new village developed farms on strip plots along the river. Connected to the west via the Mohawk River and Erie Canal, the city developed rapidly in the 19th century as part of the Mohawk Valley trade, manufacturing and transportation corridor. By 1824 more people worked in manufacturing than agriculture or trade, and the city had a cotton mill, processing cotton from the Deep South. Numerous mills in New York had such ties with the South. Through the 19th century, nationally influential companies and industries developed in Schenectady, including General Electric and American Locomotive Company (ALCO), which were powers into the mid-20th century. The city was part of emerging technologies, with GE collaborating in the production of nuclear-powered submarines and, in the 21st century, working on other forms of renewable energy.

Finally made it here for lunch. A true deli with everything under the son. Including all kinds of salads & sides, choices of soups and beverages. The Rubens were fantastic.I don't mind paying a little more when the sandwiches are so large. Excellent service as well.

Hubby and I stopped for lunch and thought the food was very good. He had the sampler plate and I had the patty melt. Portions were large and fries were hot and seasoned just right. Lone waitress did an excellent job of serving the whole place and was very pleasant. So glad new owners are making it go, just wish they would update the place a little.

Went to dinner there this past Saturday after seeing a show at the Proctors theater. I wanted a warm deli sandwich so after surveying the menu I ordered their Gourmet Corned Beef & Pastrami sub (I innocently ordered the Giant size) and a potato knish. The sandwich was absolutely enormous and very tasty. Maybe it's the salami that was also inside of it. The bread was soft and delicious. I barely made it through half. The potato knish was in the shape of a square and also of good size. Not one of those small round knishes that they pass off as knishes that I often see in restaurants. Of course, the sandwich came with a pickle. Easy parking, too. We came here instead of Gershon's because it was opened past 5 p.m. The restaurant has plain décor, but that's what you expect in a deli. The deli counter is available on the other side of the wall. So glad we came.
Where to eat American food in Schenectady: The Best Restaurants and Bars
There's the food: Their name brand pasta is really good. The grated cheese is the best around and good value. Ahh...the Italian cookies. And then there are the people - always friendly. Waiting in line is always a pleasure because of the good conversation.
I usually try to check out local restaurants, but I was in a hurry and knew I could get in and get out. The server was so polite, which far exceeded my expectation of a chain restaurant. He made dressing suggestions, explained the new sandwich, and made jokes.
