We were recommended by two people to have lunch here. We turned up at peak time, and were happy to wait the 40 minutes for a table, as the food looked and smelt delicious. I ordered the soup and a sandwich (with flat bread). After a few minutes a rather sullen teenager said the soup was finished. So my meal came with what looked like half a sandwich for almost the same cost as the full meal. After I had eaten my sandwich the food board was updated to say soup was back on. Why could the server not have just told me to wait a few minutes...The cakes looked good but were not priced. Given that I felt that we'd been ripped off, we opted to go elsewhere for coffee and cake.We are delighted that Stacks was recommended to you, not once, but twice and delighted you thought the food "looked and smelt delicious". You were clearly happy to wait for it. Weekends are always, really busy and our team works flat out to keep everyone fed and happy, making everything fresh to order. As you waited, you would have been able to see exactly what you got for your money as plates were delivered to other diners. To clarify, we do not serve sandwiches at all. There are two options, either filled toasties or filled flatbread wraps - wraps which cannot be halved. Adding to a selection of main dishes on the other side of the menu. The toasties and flatbreads can be ordered with or without soup. Without soup, they come with salad, slaw and crisps and would have been served this way (unless you specifically asked otherwise). The Meal Deal option of a large soup plus generously filled toastie/flatbread costs 9.95 but the flatbread+salad costs less from the menu as an item of its own. You didn't pay for soup if you didn't get it, so value was not compromised. We clearly state on the board outside that we're not a fast food place and our customers appreciate that good homemade food takes time. If soup runs out, we don't simply open a tin and produce more - we make it from fresh ingredients. In the middle of a busy service, our priority is to send out the meals already on order and seasoning/finishing the next batch of soup is done as soon as possible. Our waiters never promise a time, because there are too many variables - anyone used to either cooking or eating in good quality restaurants will understand this. We do not have "sullen" teenagers working for us. We do however have young people who understandably get tired after a very busy service and who don't enjoy having to tell customers something they want to order has sold out. Two of our team are only 14 and we've received countless lovely comments about how well they deal with people. Still, delivering bad news with a smile is a skill that doesn't come easy, so apologies if you felt your waiter to be less than cheery. We're glad you thought the cakes looked good, they certainly are! Again, all made from scratch using the best quality ingredients. What a shame you chose to go and find something elsewhere rather than just ask the price! Given all the good things you've said about the quality of our food and the number of happy customers we serve, we are disappointed with your two star rating, but accept you must have been desperate for a bowl of soup that day. We visited on a Friday for lunch. Nice to see plenty of tables occupied, a good sign. There is an attractive restaurant upstairs with good views over the surrounding countryside but as one of our group has limited mobility we ate downstairs where there are several tables. The food was very good, we had soups, sandwiches and sweets. The sweets were particularly good.. All the staff were very pleasant and helpful but at times service could have been slightly smoother. As the place is newly opened they may just need a bit more time to hone the way things are run. Will definitely visit again.
