The building that harbors âFamigliaâ and the storefront of this restaurant looked unattractive and not inviting at all. However, the interior was a far cry from its street view. The small nonsmokersâ area, where we were lucky to be given the last empty table, turned out to be nicely decorated in a simple, slightly rustic and elegant manner.Obviously due to the origin of the host couple, the hallmark of âFamigliaâ were grill dishes from the Balkans, which most guests seemed to choose. Two pages of pizzas, both the usual variants and more special ones, were the second focus of its permanent menu. Additionally, it featured a few fish dishes.Although the restaurant was full, our meals were served after only a moderate waiting time. We were surprised how creatively dressed they were. Moreover, they not only pleased the eye but also the palate. Portions were so huge that some guests asked for doggy bags before leaving. Seeing this as well as the fairly small prices of the pizzas and Balkan grill dishes, value for money was excellent. We appreciated a lot how hospitably the young wait staff received us. In particular, the female host excelled by her friendliness and kindness. When paying the bill, we were even offered a digestive or a homemade lime liqueur. Thus, we really felt welcome at this place, not just as customers. Since the great performance of âFamigliaâ does not go unnoticed, making a reservation is advisable, especially at the weekend.

The restaurant âKanonenhofâ, although having a long tradition, was taken over by a young couple from Ex-Yugoslavia only in 2011. So far they made only minor changes. While the interior looks very much like before, the menu was modified to a certain extent. It now comprises a few typical Balkan dishes as e.g. ÄevapÄiÄi, but still boasts several of the classics of this restaurant. Some particularities also have remained the same, such as using a milk can rather than a tureen as a container for soup and serving one particular dish in a small wooden push cart. I was somewhat deceived that even on a Sunday at Midday there is only the permanent menu, but no menu of the day.The proprietors as well as the rest of the staff are remarkably hospitable and friendly. I do not know whether the waitress responsible for our table was still an apprentice or not. At any rate, she served the dishes and beverages in a completely unprofessional manner, although she obviously tried to do her best.Kanonenhof certainly strives to be more than an average restaurant and its price level corresponds to this ambition. The main courses we had were alright, but not sensational. A little more attention to presenting the dishes on the plates would be welcome if one wants to belong to this category of restaurants. That they know how to do it proved the âMohr im Hemdâ with a ball of ice cream, which we had as a dessert. It was both excellent and nicely decorated. All summed up we were quite satisfied and in spite of the aforementioned minor shortcomings value for money was acceptable.
Where to eat Mediterranean food in Klagenfurt: The Best Restaurants and Bars
âDalmatoâ had moved to rather small premises in the city center only in September 2016. The dining area was of the sober style of a Croatian âKonobaâ, with bare wooden tables and paper placemats, but quite nicely decorated. After having been assigned a table we had to wait fairly long until the host brought us the menus and asked what we would like to drink.Since we had lunch there on a Saturday, we had to content ourselves with the permanent menu because menus of the day were offered only from Monday through Friday. It was all right with us that this place provided just a limited choice made up primarily of fish dishes, complemented with a few meat dishes (mostly of minced meat typical for Croatia). All dishes were of a plain kind. In other words, we did not detect anything creative at the permanent menu. When we received our meals after a normal waiting time, we recognized that some of them did not fully correspond to the descriptions at the menu. For instance, a mediocre, very soft bread was served instead of toasted bread and so-called grilled calamari had in fact been fried in a pan. Portions were of ordinary size and the food was not bad, but rather greasy and not exceptional at all. This might have been acceptable if âDalmatoâ were cheap. However, this was not the case and its performance by no means justified its advanced prices. This also applied to the sluggish service, which moreover lacked friendliness. We had to ask for a coffee ourselves and were not even offered a dessert either.
