We stopped for lunch here on our way back to San Jose. This roadside restaurant offers tipical Costa Rican food. The service was excellent and the manager even introduced himself to us and offered us a complimentary Costa Rican tortilla dish that we had not seen in any other restaurants. The decor focuses on promoting Costa Rica and I would recommend this restaurant.
I tried in vain to get this place up on Trip Advisor last year. We've been to Chicharronera (Barra 750 #2) a few times each visit to Costa Rica because of the delicious food that still maintains high standards and at a very reasonable price. 3 years ago I had the best ever chicken soup that I still remember it was that good. Last year we were in the new bar area and enjoyed a light bite provided by our server and bar tender Ringo who also provided us with great conversation. This year; El Rey also provided us with light bite as we enjoyed conversation and the food. Their beans are delicious, soups fantastic and their ceviche outstanding. We'll definately return again and again. Orotina is a great place to take a day trip to enjoy this beautiful "city of fruit" and have a parque, Parque Jose` Marti that has 3 sloths in the trees and if your fortunate enough to see one hanging around it's more the norm to the locals. Try Chicharronera for great food, service and atmosphere.
Lunch was at Rancho La Tecas small, roadside taverna in Orotina. We started with a large glass of fresh grapefruit, our starter was a lovely mixed salad and I had seafood and my wife had a large sea bass for main course. The welcome was very friendly, the service was very good and the food was super- definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

This is my new go-to spot for a first meal when landing in Costa Rica. It is 1 hour from the Airport down the Costanera highway. Straight Costa Rican food menu with casados, gallo pinto, and arroz dishes. Good food. Reasonable prices. Friendly service. Nice airy clean dining area.

Food was amazing, staff very attentive and the view was amazing! I saw my first Red Macaw there. It's a must try for all in the area.
When you're driving between San José and Manuel Antonio (or Quepos) where should you stop? Here. Comida tÃpica that is both delicious and very well-priced. We were there for breakfast. Huge plates of eggs and rice and beans and tortillas. We also ordered a local "bread" that looks like a huge pancake made out of corn. And to drink? Refreshing juices. All of this was served in a friendly atmosphere and in an efficient manner. Then look at the bill and realize that to feed six (yes, 6) people breakfast it cost $34. What more could a hungry traveler want?

This is a large roadside stop with a restaurant serving a variety of foods at a buffet line, a small bakery to one side, toilets, and a huge gift shop with an emphasis on crafts and souvenirs produced by local artisans. There is a charming garden on the hillside at the back of the place, and plenty of parking for everything from trucks to cars to motor coaches. This is the place to create your own casados or 'set meal' of meat, rice or noodles, plantains, vegetables, and condiments. The buffet at this restaurant offered fried tilapia, olla de carne (beef stew), braised tongue in gravy, chicken, and about two dozen other dishes. I got what they called chop suey - soft noodles with an assortment of seafood and chicken in a light soy and ginger sauce. I got the tilapia, breaded and fried lightly; I got yellow rice, and some vegetables. I liked my meal. It reminded me of truck-stop comfort food back in the U.S.Afterward, I ventured into the gift shop and got carved wooden figures of animals, a book, and some post cards. There is so much stuff to choose from, and pricing isn't really that bad considering that this is the only tourist trap in miles. You'll like this stop. Have fun and enjoy!

The excellent reviews and location made this an easy choice for us as we headed from the airport to Jaco in search of a quick bite. The food was authentic, fresh, delicious and the service was excellent! The empanadas were fantastic and harder to come by in many local Costa Rican restaurants (we learned after eating here). This was such a wonderful and enjoyable start to our vacation!
