Sifnos (Greek: Σίφνος; the spelling Siphnos is obsolete in English but still by convention often used to refer to the island in ancient times) is an island municipality in the Cyclades island group in Greece. The main town, near the center, known as Apollonia (pop. 869), is home of the island's folklore museum and library. The town's name is thought to come from an ancient temple of Apollo on the site of the church of Panayia Yeraniofora. The second-largest town is Artemonas (800), thought to be named after an ancient temple of Apollo's sister-goddess Artemis, located at the site of the church of Panayia Kokhi. The village of Kastro (118), was the capital of the island during ancient times until 1836. It is built on top of a high cliff on the island's east shore and today has extensive medieval remains and is the location of the island's archeological museum. The port settlement, on the west coast of the island is known as Kamares (245).

We were here on a cold and rainy evening so the deck was closed and it was quiet.....until the massive tour group showed up! It has a fairly sterile feel inside and the location is a bit further away but the views would be great on a clear day. The food was good but it doesnât quite reach being excellent. Worth a try though.

Letâs start talking about the place. Its in a big garden very quite and good atmosphere. The stuff is so friendly, smart and the organization is out of this world. The foods are a mix of traditional Greek food combined with other ingredients that change the traditional food to something new.Its a little bit expensive but you are not going to regret spending your money here

Second year and is even better! Incredibly balanced dishes that we ate and have overcome our expectations. Carpaccio was like a work of art with its materials complementing each other. The tuna is a very successful different approach dish, the smoked bass an ointment in simplicity and a dish that you will not find anywhere else, the cod had everything that must have a dish that is perfect, the combination of taste was so elegant that every bite it was a taste experience and finally the octopus, although I am the philosophy that some traditional things are not overcome, this dish drove me away and traveled to me in time making me think of all the good octopus dishes I've eaten these years, it contained all these dishes on a bite, as we explained to the owner (Zannis) was quite complicated preparation which worth you describe. Prices on main dishes is very reasonable for this quality of food. The advantages of the restaurant are the parking space and the friendly owner who is willing to explain every dish he offers. I wish she stayed so good and had the opportunity to visit it again soon.

We stayed at the Smaragdi Hotel for 4 weeks and had the pleasure of eating breakfast everyday at restaurant. The breakfast menu is extensive and, as a resident of the hotel, you can pick any combination of items form the menu. Our go to breakfast was bread and marmalade, a fruit bowl with yoghurt and granola, freshly squeezed orange juice and double cappuccino and a tea. All were delicious. Antonis, the owner, makes one of the best cappuccinos we've tasted. And is the most attentive of hosts.Having seen the triple pancakes being served to others, we decided that we needed to test them out. They are amazing but a significant undertaking! The chocolate ones are a sweet tooth's delight. If you prefer savoury, go for the triple pancakes with eggs and bacon. Andonis, the chef, also makes wicked omelettes. We ate in the Smaragdi restaurant in the evening around 7 times during our stay. We could have easily eaten there every night, but we like to try different tavernas. The Smaragdi was one of the best places we ate on the island. Everything we had was delicious - squid ink pasta, pork chops, special Greek night souvlaki and the chocolate pie (just amazing and massive!)Andonis, the chef, is passionate, philosophical, warm, chatty, exuberant. He's cooking is fantastic. On quieter nights, he'll join you at your table for a fun and philosophical chat about life, Sifnos and anything you care to talk about. All the food he cooks is beautifully presented and tastes great. Towards the end of our trip, the restaurant was very quiet, so Andonis offered to cook us a 3 course meal of his own design. A delicious pizza starter, chicken, mushroom and truffle oil pasta dish, and a fruity/creamy dessert and beautiful bottle of wine selected by Antonis, the owner. Such kindness, which really touched our hearts. Yorgas (George) the waiter was so attentive. No matter how how busy he was, he always had a smile on his face and managed time to have a chat. Together with Illia (who moved on while we were there), they kept everyone happy with their fantastic service. If you're coming to Sifnos, a visit to Smaragdi is a must. You'll get great food and attentive service with a smile from Antonis and all the team.Efharisto para poli, Antonis, George, Andonis and all the team. Much love, Mr Panathinaiskos and Mrs Peaches cheeks! x
