Where to eat Contemporary food in New Orleans: The Best Restaurants and Bars

January 31, 2020 Alida England

Reviews on Contemporary food in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. With a little bit of this and a little bit of that all mixed together with flair and panache, beautifully vibrant New Orleans has made the most of marks left by whomever was calling the shots during whatever era over the past few centuries. Hardly a hodgepodge, the result of such a distinctive blend of cultures is an enchanting cityscape, a set of unique traditions that continuously delight the world, and a jaunty way of living that must be experienced to be appreciated.

My husband and I had lunch here today. We started out with each a cup of red beans and rice. Yummy. We shared a plate of fried green tomatoes, also yummy. We both had bowls of delicious Gumbo and wonderful bread pudding. So stuffed but so happy.

This is New Orleans, a tourist city full of tourist traps. On the edge of Lafayette Square in the CBD is Herbsaint, an unassuming restaurant serving outrageously good locally inspired dishes with top quality seasonal ingredients and a deft touch that ensures great flavor and texture combinations. A good wine list and well informed and passionate service. Our dog was more than welcome on the patio and enjoyed it too.

Boucherie was recommended by several musicians we know. The location is uptown just off of Carrollton St. The restaurant is in a small house. You feel like you are dining in a friend’s home. Very cozy and casual. The food is off the charts good. Very creative Southern food with an Asian twist. We started with the mussels with collard greens. Simply outstanding! Our entrees and cocktails were excellent as well. We love the bartender- very friendly and engaging. Prices were reasonable. Both my husband and I walked out of Boucherie with big smiles.

We had brunch on a day when the computers were down. We didn’t have a reservation so we got on the waiting list for the bar or outside. They said 2-2 1/2 hours for the wait. We weren’t sure we would stay the whole time, but decided on bloody Mary’s while we waited. They have a dozen or so vodkas and a very fun DYI bar to make it however you like. We were seated before we finished our first drink. We had chicken & biscuits and shrimp & grits. Both were amazingly good. The best part however was the fantastic service that we were given under pressure. They were slammed and the computers were up and down so they were doing hand written tickets and trying to deal with everyone paying while the credit card machines were in and out. The staff was incredibly professional throughout and managed to keep their sense of humor. It is obviously a well run restaurant. I would suggest getting a reservation though.
