Restaurante do Forte Linking the Soul of Restaurant do Forte to the Essence of the São Tiago Fortress (17th Century) is a rare encounter between history, architecture and gastronomy. These spaces can be interpreted, in a genuine experience distinguished b
We have just returned from a week's holiday in Funchal where we stayed very near to the Retaurant Do Forte. We popped by on the morrning that we arrived as we wanted somewhere to eat that first evening. The restaurant does not open for lunch but a waiter came forward to talk to us and explain the menus to us. His friendliness encoraged us to have a meal there that evening. This was the first of four that we had there, and another at their sister restaurant not far away.We were able to sample between us most of the dishes and we were never disapponted. We recommend the Concept Menu as best value for money. What makes this restaurant special is that the staff make the evening a special occasion.Service is not rushed but follows a steady pace. All the staff under Silvio, and he himself, make the evening an ocassion and inter-act well with the diners in a friendly and informative way.The food was really wonderful and was always cooked perfectly to our taste and requirements. The layout and ambience of the restaurant is ideal for a long enjoyable evening. Do Forte is probably the nicest restauarnat I have ever been to. To go four times in close succession without any diapointment or complaint says something for this lovely restaurant !

We have been going to La Ao Fundo since it first opened and always excellent. The 'couverte' is well worth having and an alternative to the excellent range of starters. I usually go for the 'fish of the day', which is generously sized, and the best risotto I have ever had. Sensibly priced, good quality wines. Always a friendly welcome from the staff and Jaime - 'Chef'.Muito obrigado

Why this place is no longer No 1 in Funchal totally escapes me. I can only believe that other places have a load of âfriends â posting on their behalf. Not the cheapest but the food is exquisite, the service superb and the ambience fabulous. We eat here every year when we come to Madeira and the quality remains as high as ever.

The restaurant "Latada do Doutor" it's placed in the heart of the Funchal city. A place dedicated to the love of the well eating and drinking, with a lovely backyard/terrace, surrounded with a plantation of aromatic and medicinal herbs where the costumers
We tried to find this restaurant last year, but geography has never been my strong point, and we failed miserably. We were actually just having a stroll and stumbled upon it on our return to Madeira this year. We booked fairly last minute through The Fork and thought that if it wasn't to our liking, we'd just have a main course, a drink and move on. Anyway, lovely staff greeted us and the covered courtyard away from the hustle and bustle of the City and the badgering of the waiting staff on Rua Santa Maria was a delight. We ended up sampling different wines (surrounded by birdsong and their home garden of herbs) and having a really lovely 3 course meal. Great care had been taken with the flavours and, although we had fish and pork for our main courses, they were both more inventive / creative than the standard fare. For example, my fish came on a bed of flavoured potatoes (fennel seed / Rosemary?) with roasted onions and toasted flaked almonds, plus a stuffed tomato - a very good sized portion, but I ate the lot. Please don't let the hidden location deter you, it's actually quite central once you know where it's hidden and becomes an all the more attractive proposition because of that. If you head up from the Marina road (Avenida do Mar) passing Theo's Bazar Cafe and the Golden Gate on your right, cross the road, and head straight up Avenida Zarco, there's the entrance to a medical practice and to the restaurant almost opposite you when you reach the next junction, and Bob's your Uncle - not off the beaten track at all, although it will feel like that when you get there. The Restaurant "Latada do Doutor" and the entire staff thank you for your excellent evaluation. It was a pleasure to serve you. We hope to see you soon. Best regards.
