Things to do in Puerto Rio Tranquilo

A friendly welcome & simple but tasty food. Reasonable prices & the hosts were helpful with information about a local bird we had encountered during the day! Portions were substantial so a good option for hungry souls.

Being a tiny village, Puerto Rio Tranquilo does not have many restaurants. The one at Hosteria Costanera is probably the most decent one. It is good, not very good, and the options are limited, but keep in mind that this is the end of the world.

We were quite hungry and this was the only restaurant open for another hour. It is a family business. I ordered merluza (white fish) a la plancha (grilled) with roasted potatoes and my husband lomo (steak) with the same potatoes. We split an Ensalada Chilena (tomatoes, onions, green chile) for two. My fish was okay though oversalted. Bob's steak did not come a punto (rare) as he requested. He said it had the consistency of shoe leather. The potatoes were fine. The salad was good but huge. We just ordered tap water to drink. It was odd that the menu items kept changing every 15-20 minutes. Bob would have ordered grilled chicken, but it was only offered to other tables after our waiter took our order. The same with French fries. It had not even occurred to us to ask about the prices. We have lived in Chile part-time for many years and are pretty familiar with what food costs in which type of restaurant. When the bill came for 29.000 Chilean pesos (about US$45) we were floored! When we mentioned our experience the following day to a Chilean tour guide, he told us he had heard that same feedback from other tourists. I like family businesses to succeed, but not when they shamelessly overcharge customers.

This place is better than any other in Puerto Rio Tranquilo by miles. Starting with actually professional service to tasty and well prepared food. Absolutely delicious, fragrant and well cooked meat and fish. Even bread tasted good, a rarity in that area. One thing to know - they add 20% service charge right away. We were more than ready to tip that, but I still find it a bad taste to force a tip.Definitely worth a visit though.
