Cool location. Very central in Gouda. Very old brasserie. Lovely staff and nice menu selection. Take the Sunday brunch if available.

Location, food and wine were just perfect! I tried the chef's menu with matching wines.. Just great!!!! Don't miss it, it's a tangible example that even in the Netherlands you can eat extremely well

The cheese market is held every Thursday. It is what the locals do to entertain the tourists. The demonstrations given show how cheese was bought through clapping if hands with the buyer. Everyone is wearing colourful traditional dress. The market place is vibrant with chimes from the town hall clock makes for a wonderful experience. After walking around the square we decided where to have a coffee. The coffee was excellent and accompanied with traditional apple pie and cream. The place was so good we doubled back later for lunch picking a prime spot to people watch at the same time. The Gouda soup was perfect. It came with a couple of pieces of bread and ordered with a glass of wine and local beer. The service was fast, efficient and friendly. Our waitress spent time taking to us and we never felt rushed. It was very laid back. Two American tourist sat at the next table discussing what they should order. I suggested the Gouda soup. They were of course delighted. One not to be missed. Now how do you make it?

We ate two types of fondue, both were ok. The sparkling wine was a higher temperature should be. We asked to get it colder and the answer was kind of funny...- something about the correct temperature that factory recomends. It was not the first time we drink sparkling wine so I think have enough knowledge about if it is hot or cold. Price was correct

Early on a September Saturday evening the old-fashioned interior was already full but luckily it was still warm enough to eat outside, with a good view over the market square. The cheese soup, with bits of bacon, celery etc, was very good but also very filling, which slightly spoilt my enjoyment of the traditional pan-fried mussels and chips which followed. Perhaps I should have gone for the pear and blue cheese salad which my wife had and which would have been a lighter option. We were told that we could have extra portions of chips for free but we were too full for that. Never mind, the food, a couple of beers and watching the world go by made for a very pleasant evening. By the way, noted that they stopped serving food at 8.30pm.

This restaurant was recommended by my sister and brother in law. We arrived without a reservation but were able to get a table. The waiting staff was excellent and the food was good and reasonably priced. The portions of the mains were however on the small side and it pays to get an entrée or some sides if you are hungry. Try the Texels Wit beer when you are there.
