The 150-year-old University of Notre Dame is South Bend's biggest tourist draw, and for good reason. Though it's not easy to land seats at the 80,000-plus-capacity Notre Dame Stadium for a "Fighting Irish" football game, you'll find plenty of attractions on the beautiful, expansive campus. Highlights include numerous works of art, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a replica of the famous shrine. Football fans will also want to visit the College Football Hall of Fame, which features interesting perspectives on the game and inductee videos. Whether or not you remember the Studebaker automobile, which saw its demise in the early sixties, you're sure to enjoy the Studebaker National Museum, featuring more than 75 vehicles drawn from the history of the company, beginning with horse-drawn carriages. South Bend has several fine museums, including the South Bend Regional Museum of Art and the Northern Indiana Center for History, a complex of four museums. Don't leave without trying truffles or fudge from the South Bend Chocolate Company.

We stopped by South Bend on our way to Illinois from New York because we were hoping to see Mayor Pete and visit the city he has spoken/written about. We knew we had to stop at Peggs. We are glad that we did. We came into the restaurant close to closing, but they were so accommodating and not at all in a rush to get us out. We ordered a variety of items among us -- breakfast, a burger, and a salad. Everything was great! They are super friendly and also make good coffee:) We also got a Pete 2020 t-shirt as well.

This establishment opened a few months ago and is a welcome venue in South Bend. I met a friend for desert and a cup of coffee for a total of $5. The menu and hours are somewhat limited but they are in a start up phase. The atmosphere is relaxed. There is cool artwork on the wall and a nice vibe to the place. The staff was responsive to answering my questions though they were busy and business was bustling for a Friday afternoon. The General is a great addition to the East Bank neighborhood in South Bend. Street parking was manageable. Check their web site before venturing in for menu options.
We tried this great place at the recommendation of her coworker. It was delicious! Our server Dawn told us the specialties after asking where we were from. She & the cook were very friendly. My husband had the jalapeño sausage & a side of gravy. The skillet was a huge portion. My daughter & I split the feta & spinach omelette, fresh home fries & a homemade grille biscuit with homemade jam. Counter seating, a couple high tops & 2 low tops that each seat 4. Quaint & delicious homemade food! Will return!!
