Where to eat Cafe food in Savannah: The Best Restaurants and Bars

September 8, 2019 Harland Bartelt

Discover Restaurants offering the best Cafe food in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Charming Savannah is the picture of antebellum hospitality, thanks to period architecture and oak-lined streets. It’s tempting to spend your trip just relaxing on vast verandas and sipping mint juleps, but there are plenty of historical sites and museums to explore. Haunting (and possibly haunted) Bonaventure Cemetery is one of the hallmarks of the city, featuring beautiful obelisks, masses of flowers, and ivy-covered crypts. Dine on fresh seafood and creamy grits for a taste of Savannah home cooking.

My wife and I were walking along Broughton Street one early afternoon when we came upon The District Cafe & Eatery, a corner restaurant with a large sign advertising their signature drink, “Chamoozies,” a mixture of frozen fruit puree and champagne. Curious as to how it would taste, we entered the restaurant and decided to have lunch. As soon as we sat down, my wife asked the waitress for a lime chamoozie from among several daily flavors. It was served in a very tall glass, much larger than we had expected. The drink was absolutely delicious. It was now time to order our food. I selected their BAT (bacon, avocado and tomato) housed in a pressed panini, accompanied by a small bag of potato chips. My wife opted for “The District Chopped” salad (greens, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, bleu cheese, candied pecans and roast chicken). What makes District Cafe stand out is that many of the ingredients on your plate are organic, coming from local farms, farmers’ markets and artisans. Their coffees are locally-roasted as well. Breads, sauces and dressings are made in-house. Equally deserving of praise is the fact that both owners and employees demonstrate an acute awareness of the environment, from the furniture being constructed of recycled wood to the waitstaff sorting trash for recycling after cleaning off a customer’s table. If you are looking for a locally-owned, eco-friendly restaurant with excellent food, The District Cafe & Eatery is the place to be.

We had read the menu and were practically salivating at the though of our yummy sandwich and salads. I ordered my sweet tea and our server then took their sweet time bringing it. We sat down at noon. At 12:45, my drink appeared. We were flying out later that afternoon and I began to wonder if this was a bad idea. Our meal arrived around 1pm. But, we were missing a fork for the salad! We ended up going in and getting one from a different member of staff because our gal would vaporize each time she left. My other half loves his dessert and he had his heart set on the coconut cake. I was concerned. It was 1:45 and we had to be out of there by 2:30 the latest. When she finally came back, he asked if she could get us our cake in the next 10 minutes. She looked dubious and said she'd ask the kitchen. Ugh. Was it being make from scratch? We couldn't understand what was involved in bringing out a slice of cake. 8 minutes later, she returned and said she'd tried. He got his cake at 2pm on the dot, sans fork!!!! He had to practically tackle her before she disappeared into the ether again to ensure he had an eating utensil. The food, including the cake, was delicious. The service? Abysmal.

I visited Pie Society just before leaving Savannah as mandatory evacuations were in place in advance of Hurricane Dorian. I picked up Chicken PotPie and heated it up the next day at home. This magic pie made the long drive and horrible traffic fade away. The flavor is so amazing that your eyes will roll back. When I return to Savannah again, I will definitely visit again and order the Chicken PotPie.

My friend and I went to the Kayak Kafe for lunch based on the Tripadvisor reviews. It is a casual, comfortable restaurant with a large menu. We had a difficult time deciding what to order because everything sounded so good. Upon their recommendation, we ended up ordering the same thing the women at the next table had! We were not sorry. We split a black eyed pea burger and a chicken quesadilla. Both were tasty with the burger being exceptionally good. It was so unusual and very flavorful. We were very hungry but still could not finish the large portions we were served. The staff was friendly and efficient. Will definitely go back to Kayak Kafe next time I am in Savannah.
