Where to eat Cafe food in Islay: The Best Restaurants and Bars

March 9, 2020 Sachiko Swiger

Find out what Cafe restaurants to try in Islay. The Isle of Islay spans 240 square miles, with an impressive 130 miles of coastline. The island is famous for its malt whiskies, and there are eight distilleries on the island. To be sure, many people visit the Isle to tour distilleries and "appreciate" whisky, but the wildlife and scenery are also a big draw. Bird-watching is particularly popular through the year. Just don't try to squeeze it in after a distillery tour or two. Looking through binoculars has been known to make some people woozy, especially after whisky.

This is perfect for those visiting the distillery, although it’s pretty remote for a random lunch stop while touring the island. Service was fast and friendly. I had a toasty with red onion marmalade, a half cup of Cullen Skink, a yummmmy apple crisp with ice cream, and a latte. I’m not a scotch drinker but this gave me a place to eat and relax while the others in my group did a tasting.

Not the "poshest" restaurant in town, but for price, quality and service it takes top marks. The staff are volunteers and enjoy what they do for the community and from the reviews I've read, have a standard to maintain. Well done all. Famed for their fish and chips, don't leave it too late in the day to try it as they do sell out, don't be disappointed.

Certainly been to worse places, but the food is a bit bland. We had slightly too salty home made soup and a very disappointing mozerella panini with no taste whatsover. Home made cakes looked decent enough, but most patrons seem to veer towards burgers and chips. It's that kind of place.
