Met a friend for lunch having found this place via TripAdvisor. I had lovely home made lentil soup and my friend had a bacon and black pudding roll. I wish I had space left because it looked lovely. Took the dogs with me and there were other dogs there too. Thoroughly recommend

We stopped for lunch at the Garden Cafe during a visit to Traquair House. The food was freshly cooked and reasonable priced, most importantly it tasted great and the service was friendly. The highlight was undoubtedly the chocolate cake; the portion was generous, it was very light and tasted delighful. The best chocolate cake we have every eaton.

On arrival several of the tables had dirty cups and plates etc. There were waiting staff chatting, but not clearing tables. We sat at one of the tables that needed clearing, and moved the cups ourselves. The table needed wiping, but didnât get wiped. The whole place looks pretty tatty, a couple of scruffy sofas, and a pile of untidy newspapers etc. We ordered one salad and one pancakes. Both were very good. Someone can definitely prepare food well, but I think itâs let down by poor cleaning etc. Iâm not put off going back, and hope it improves.

We were delighted and perplexed that we seemed to be the only people in Coltmans on a Thursday evening in early October. Initially, I felt the restaurant was lacking in ambience and could have benefitted from some mood lighting such as candles on the tables however, we were there to eat. The bread on offer was so delicious I was in danger of eating too much of it. My dining partner enjoyed his starter of hot smoked salmon but was totally knocked out by his main course of venison. He is still raving about how well it was presented and how wonderful it tasted. He does get out rather a lot, so for him to praise this dish so highly was unusual. I enjoyed my ribeye steak followed by a simple coffee. My companion chose to end his meal with a selection of sorbets which seemed to hit the spot. We had fabulous wine, Hogs Head if I remember correctly. We would recommend this restaurant highly. Definitely a place to book for a weekend in Peebles.
