Things to do in Haltwhistle
Visited this newly opened food store/cafe for the first time recently.A great spot for it, just off junction 43 of the M6 motorway so will be handy for travellers, and a welcome change from using service stations, no doubt.Food all looks nice. We bought sandwiches which were still fresh and tasty when we took them to work the next day.We thought the food was competitively priced, some items are cheaper than we'd seen in the supermarkets.Didn't have time to visit the cafe, but will do so next time.

The Pantry had been recommended to us by our hosts when staying in the area and we were not disappointed. I had the full English and my partner had the rarebit. Excellent quality and rare value for money. Come armed with an appetite.

We stopped in on a whim while visiting Hadrian's Wall. A little out of season, so we were the only ones there. A great welcome, and had a fascinating conversation about cheese making with the farmer! I had the BEST chocolate cake ever. Light, fluffy, tasty and not too rich. My gf had proper loose-leaf Earl Gray, in proper china while I had a fresh coffee in a proper mug. This is a cafe as it's supposed to be! We also tasted the cheese and bought some, it's really very good and the taste develops as you eat it. Amazing! If it wasn't 4 hours away I'd be there every Sunday for tea.

We planned breakfast at The Sill as the menu looked good, but left as the only things they had available were bacon, sausage and eggs (fried or scrambled but not, for some reason, poached) and offered a poor, grunted explanation but no apology. The Pillar Box, by contrast, was welcoming, friendly, buzzing with warmth and life and provided an enjoyable full breakfast, very reasonably priced. And unlike the Sill, we didn't have to pay for parking.

A small owner run and managed cafe serving mainly organic homemade cakes, bakes and soups and sandwiches. Also small range of organic produce available to buy. Walkers, cyclists and dogs welcome. Core opening hours as stated but often open later in the su
No coffee machine and 20 mins for a filter. Probably good for Haltwhistle though. Party of 5 geriatrics walked in. Confused the staff. Saw it would be carnage so just ordered a filter coffee. Decided to go to the co-op for a sandwich instead. Understaffed. Over sized saucer too. Impossible to use. They'll get better. Can't get any worse.Apologies for not responding to this review sooner but I have been "off Line" for a while and did not pick it up. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your visit, but as my granny used to tell me "it costs nothing to be polite". You have managed to be rude about both Kasteale, my older visitors and Haltwhistle, all in one small paragraph. I think you must have visited us on one of the three days our Fracino Coffee machine was waiting for a spare filter to arrive. As a small rural business it is always a juggling act to staff appropriately. It is not economically viable to pay staff "just in case" everyone walks in at once as must have happenned on this occasion. Most customers are understanding of this and if you were in a hurry for an appointment or a train or bus and had mentioned it we could have served you first if other customers were ok to wait. As for the saucer? In six years of business that is the first complaint about saucers, so I am a little baffled. I hope you enjoyed your sandwich from the coop?
