Taunton /ˈtɔːntən/ is a large regional town in Somerset, England. The town currently peaks at a population of 69,570 as of 2018. The town itself has over 1,000 years of religious and military history, including a monastery dating back to the 10th century and Taunton Castle, which has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory. The Normans then built a stone structured castle, which belonged to the Bishops of Winchester. The current heavily reconstructed buildings are the inner ward, which now houses the Museum of Somerset and the Somerset Military Museum.

Loads of parking. Welcomed at the bar. Polite staff showed us to our table, hidden away as previously asked for on booking. Lamb rump was excellent and would definitely have again on my next visit. You must check this pub out if you can find someone to drive you, so you can take advantage of the real ales!

We are a traditional public house and restaurant with 5 luxury bed and breakfast rooms. We serve fresh food using local produce.
Having read other reviews, I felt rather let down when we had our meal. I realise some of our party were late, but they had a distance to travel, with very young children. We offered to order our meal but it was clear we were all expected to be seated and order together, so we waited. That said, when we got out meals, my roast lamb was nearly cold and we had 2 very small dishes of veg between 10 adults, so had to request more. My mother was also not happy wth her roast potatoes but I think by the time we were eating had lost interest so didn't say anything until later. Waiting staff were good, I can't comment on anyone else. For reference anyone with children, there were only 2 high chairs - we needed both! and no baby changing facilities which is something that I would expect from a venue catering for families. I dislike being asked to tip, I will leave a tip if I think it is merited

The barman/waiter was friendly & professional. The surroundings & loos were plain, and two of the chairs wonky/worn in the padding. However the food was good for the price, though portion sizes could have been larger with lamb (small mash & peas). The burger particularly was special. Parking was good. Overall good.

My wife and I took a gamble on going to this little restaurant at the end of the High Street in Taunton. The restaurant goes back to a lovely garden Room and the food which came out of the tiny little galley kitchen was incredible. They have a £20 for two courses menu which is locally sourced and changes every couple of months. From being able to book online and have a real email response, the dinner was lovely. The front of house seem to get a lot of praise and she was brilliant last night. Friendly, helpful and attentive, without being annoying. We had a beautiful bottle of Rioja (all wine by the glass and no red or white more than £25 and starting from £16).Shown to a nice small table and my wife ordered grilled brie whilst I ordered the pigeon breast. The Brie was stunning, but the pigeon on a blackberry jam was the best cooked I have ever had and I love pigeon.Main courses were a massive bowl of beef bourginon with loads of lovely winter veg, thick gravy and meat that fell apart. Unusually I chose better in the main course as well with the roasted belly pork with roasted potatoes and parsnips and a heavenly stilton and cider sauce. We struggled through to two great puddings and got the chef out to ask his suggestion which was probably cruel but gave me a wonderful apple tart and my wife the lightest brownie ever.Sorry this review is so gushing but we had an incredible meal, with three courses, a bottle of lovely red wine and a glass of prosecco for my wife came to just £70! The service was lovely but please bring cash for a tip as they don't leave the card machine open for you to add a tip if paying by card.We will be back every time the menu changes, or possibly more often, the steaks on the table next to us looked incredible as well!Hello,Wow. Such a lovely review. I'm so pleased Chloe looked after you so well. We love reading your comments. Reviews like this really do make us smile. See you soonGeorgie and Ashley

We heard that the Sunday Carvery was not to be missed...........but we could not make the Sunday Carvery, so booked a Saturday Night. The whole evening was a pleasant suprise, the quality of the food was by far the highlight, clearly the pride of The Far Canal. So take the time to visit, enjoy the experience of a Chef, who knows how to cook; food. Looking forward to returning soon. You have to meet Nigel and the décor, is full of passion for the UK...........Thank you Simon, loved the evening.

Easy to find and park, nice farm setting just outside Taunton. Service was good but we were lucky, you need to book, even for breakfast. A couple of couples/small groups were turned away after us. I had the Pantry (Meat) Breakfast. Plenty to fill me up. Everything cooked really well. Nice to have a big sausage and great bacon. The best bit - proper scrambled egg, with chives. Thats how itâs done! My partner had the veggie option with extra bacon (sheâs not a veggie just likes the smashed avocado) and she said it was fab. The juice was a real winner for her and it was a good cappuccino. Had cakes to takeaway. Plus points:Welcoming for us (me, partner and 2 month old). Great food and drink. Great surroundings.Negatives:Booked needed which some may not appreciate. Cakes were a tad dry and crumbly. Absolutely coming back though and would 100% for a family breakfast. Nice staff too, chef was chatty and again, those eggs - spot on chap!
