The Red Lion was originally a farm, then in the late 1700's it became a Drovers Inn and was used by farmers to water and rest themselves and their stock on the journey to Bishop Auckland mart. Our restaurant serves an extensive menu offering plenty of cho
Brought family here having visited before. I chose one of the vegetarian dishes from a board which was brought over and family went for fish and chips. Service was quick and attentive, food very hot and with home-made chips. A local (Durham I think) real ale was recommended which was nice. Meals and drinks came out under £15 each. Will visit again.

Restaurant and Guest Accommodation. 8 Bedrooms all en-suite including a Luxury Room with Hot Tub in its own private patio garden. Traditional Home Cooked Food Served 7 Days a week Breakfast, Light Lunch, Afternoon Tea & Evening Meals. Sunday Lunch 12-8!
Visited here on a Friday night and left quite disappointed, especially given the high rating on here. Where to start...Well the place was busy, very busy, which is a good thing, however the acoustics of the restaurant leave a lot to be desired. It's all hard furnishings and hard floors so noise just bounces round the room. It's a racket! You struggle to hear yourself talk and find yourself having to shout across the table to each other. As I say above I like a busy place but the noise here was deafening. It was more akin to a busy canteen. Also I'm not sure what sort of restaurant welcomes a party with a young baby in on a Friday night, screaming away but there you go. As I say in the title, this may be what you're after, but I imagine many of you reading this don't want to hear that on a Friday night in a supposedly good quality restaurant. Still, the crying baby's noise was drowned out by the general noise anyway so it made little difference! The staff were all very young boys. They did their best but it wasn't great. When we were seated, nobody brought us menus, nobody took a drinks order. In fact nobody came at all, for ages, so we had to accost the poor young pot washer who thankfully came to our rescue. Likewise when you first walk in the place is a shambles, you've no idea where to go, given it's part hotel, part pub, part restaurant. The main front of house guy wasn't exactly welcoming.Anyway, the food was okay, nothing special but it was certainly better than the environment. Quite a curious place really and one I shan't be hurrying back to. All in all if you've an ounce of class, or like places that have, I'd be looking elsewhere.

Visited here after reading positive reviews, was not disappointed, what a little gem! Sunday lunch was amazing, fresh and beautifully cooked, and the price was just unbelievable. The pub is very quirky, definitely no frills but I liked it, loads of interesting things to look at. Staff were very friendly and accommodating, canât wait to go back. Please note, they donât accept payment by card here, itâs cash only, donât get caught out.

Small friendly family run restaurant. Est. 25 years.Priding itself on its home cooked traditonal meals. Open 6 days a week
So first impressions matter. When you visit this place, imagine youâre visiting your aunties home for tea? I wonât lie, youâll notice the dated carpet and old wooden dining chairs, the old train pictures and dated light fittings... but you will also notice this place is spotlessly clean and well kept. The lady who served us was lovely, very warm and welcoming. This gave us the feeling that we were a guest in someoneâs home - unlike other restaurants where weâve felt like weâre on a conveyor belt being processed! The menu had plenty of options, starters at £3, mains £6.50 and desserts £3. Itâs traditional home dinners, mince and dumplings, beef dinners, chicken pies etc. And desserts are traditional: steamed puddings, cheese cakes, jam sponges etc.We loved our meals, absolutely spot on! Drinks were cheap, service was excellent and price was a give away! We were absolutely stuffed from the generous portions of good food and vegetables. This place is clean, easily accessible and parking available outside.I canât fault this place and weâre looking forward to visiting again soon. Well done guys and keep up the good work.

I called with my daughter for a light lunch. I enjoyed my posh fish finger ciabatta, although I found the tartare sauce a little greasy and tasteless - more like mayo.My daughter liked her Garlic mush ciabatta and theakstons. Pleasant waitress and nice light seating area.

The Fir Tree Country Hotel, bar and restaurant is nestled in the small village of Fir Tree itself and is surrounded by beautiful countryside, right on the doorstep of the Durham Dales. Just a 10 minutes drive to Bishop Auckland and only 12 miles from the
We have eaten here many times and enjoyed the food. However, today we called in for a drink on our way home at lunchtime. I took a seat at the bar whilst my husband went to order the drinks. There was no one behind the bar. O.k. Busy time. We waited and waited. Then my husband pressed the bell, still no one !!! We eventually left. No one even noticed us going.

Called on Friday around 5pm no problem getting a table for two. Prompt and polite service at the bar. Order taken at bar and food arrived after a little wait means freshly cooked. Nicely presented, tasted beautiful and tartar sauce home made best I have had complimented the succulent scampi. Well done will return. Waiting staff have had good training.

The Copper Mine is a pub which has a quirky interior and aims to offer food from simple dishes to dishes which any restaurant would be proud to offer!
One of the best meals Iâve had in years, easily....although my wife had the best meal of the night with slow-cooked ox cheek....... the whole thing was amazing.... please come here if youâre around youâll love it! I promise.

Excellent soundtrack to match the top quality food. As a Bishop Auckland resident, I'm surprised to find somewhere I've never been thats so good. But I was very impressed on my first visit today. In Bondgate.Quirky and small on the outside, it has loads more to offer than spuds & even they are good. Burgers, dogs, wraps, and my own favourite burritos. Cosy inside, interesting decor, calm and relaxing ambiance with great music from the 60s and 70s - think rock, Simon & Garfunkel, Beatles etc. Even has a beer garden.I'll call again.Alatbish2, thanks for great review. Super glad you enjoyed the place. We have big plans for its future . Hope to see you again soon.
