The Bell Inn, set in the lovely historic village of Horndon on the Hill, is a 15th Century Coaching Inn run by the same family for over 75 years. The two busy bars have the warm, friendly atmosphere of a 'proper' pub. There's an open fire, numerous ales o
Stayed for one night on a Saturday as we were attending a wedding reception a couple of miles away. We experienced a nice, friendly welcome and shown to our very clean, spacious and comfortable double room in a building located next to the main building itself. Had a few drinks in the garden but didn't use the restaurant apart from breakfast. I had the cooked breakfast which was very good an the others had what they said was an excellent continental breakfast. Nice location. All in all a comfortable and enjoyable short stay. Highly recommended.

I have moved from Wickford but I still go back here for my fish and chips. The food is great and the portion size is generous . There is never a massive wait time despite always being busy. None of the local chippies compare!!

Website stated 'smart casual dress'....obviously didn't apply to the rather loud individual mobile phone addict sitting at the next table wearing beach shorts & a vest covered in paint! Food was nice enough, just not enough of it...especially when you're presented with a bill of almost £90 for two people who only had two drinks with their meal. This is basically a Harvester type experience, just a smaller menu & a larger bill. What amazed me was being told that they had 'run out' of rump steak & vanilla ice cream.Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. I can only apologize that your experience didn't lice up to our usual standard. We take all our feedback seriously and I'll look into the dress code issue from that day as your right our dress code is smart casual. We hope to see you again in the future and regain your confidence.Kind regards,The management team

Set in the picturesque Essex village of Ramsden Heath, The Fox and Hounds Pub and Restaurant has been serving the villages of Ramsden Heath, Ramsden Bellhouse, Downham, Wickford and Billericay for over 200 years. In 2017 the pub went under a huge refurbis
I visited the Fox on a Tuesday evening (around 5 o clock) with my family. We were welcomed by the bar staff and given the option to eat inside the restaurant or the outside patio area, we chose outside as it was lovely day.Overall experience was amazing, I chose to have the burger with just bacon and cheese which the staff were more than willing to accommodate my request. My mother has a gluten allergy and the staff were able to advise which dishes she was able to eat.I will be definitely be returning soon, perhaps on a Sunday as Iâve heard good things about their roast.

An excellent product starts with the careful selection of the finest fresh ingredients. We source local produce whenever possible, our meats are reared at Essex farms and our fish is delivered fresh daily with much of our fruit and vegetables grown at hom
Firstly, the service was fantastic - We had a warm welcome and the attention we got from waiting staff throughout was perfect. The service and the lovely decor are unfortunately let down by lackluster food.It was a Sunday so I'm unsure if the set menu may is comparable to a la carte, however I was disappointed with my meal.I started with the soup of the day (courgette and leek) which was a vibrant green; unfortunately the taste did not match the colour. The taste was fine, but every mouthful tasted like cream, which coated my palate and stopped much else getting through. I then had a roast, and got cauliflower cheese as a side. All vegetables (potatoes and seasonal sides) were cooked well, but all lacked any sort of seasoning or flavour. The cauliflower cheese was the biggest letdown, I could barely get cheese coming through as the predominant flavour was once again cream! This was to the point that any of the nice tang you'd expect from a good cheese was completely stifled - very one-dimensional.The desserts all sounded delicious and I opted for a mango parfait. This was creamy (as it should be), sweet and was a nice component that would have been perfectly offset by some sharp fruit on the side - unfortunately the fresh kiwi and mango that accompanied the parfait was coated in a cloying coulis; so I had sweet with sweet and it was too much. It kept the theme of being too much and being unbalanced.Overall the food was cooked well enough, but the flavours were unexciting as they were unfortunately muted by either too much cream or too much sugar and not much of anything else. I would not go back at that price.Dear ConorMany thanks for taking the time to leave a review as feedback is very important to us whether it is good or bad. Thank you for comments which were referred to our Chef Team and I apologise that on this occasion the food served did not meet your expectation.Kind regardsAndrea InceMarketingMagic Mushroom

This is a traditional café, a warm welcome and plenty of seating. A wide menu, or traditional food. Great breakfasts, and they can also do excellent poached eggs, which some cafes do not even try.Looking for good traditional food, here it is
