This restaurant is located in front of a beautiful church in the historical center, very nice place for dinner. I went there with my wife, we tried, as appetizer the "Pastelzinho de angú", was perfect. For the main course we tried the "Risto Mineiro", o God, what is that? Perfect, unique experience. Impeccable service.Thank you very much for your visit!!! Certainly our location gives a special attribute to enjoy our chef's suggestions. Regards!

Travelers to São Jão del Rei have many options to appreciate the tasty food of Minas Gerais. In this restaurant wouldn't be different. You can enjoy the self-service buffet for a fair price, just a few meters from the train station in the historical center. The disadvantage is the tight internal space, which can be a little annoying.

Maybe for a tourist from abroad who may not have eaten at another Brazilian self-service restaurant this may be worth knowing as a first experience, but for those of us who already go to such eateries on a day to day basis in our hometowns, this is not a special place at all for the food. It is nicely set in a house with several rooms, gives it a homey touch, and really well-located near the train station and the food is certainly not bad. However, only having orange juice for fresh fruit juice a bit of a disappointment for a restaurant in Brazil. Last but not least, prices not especially low, as one would possible expect from a smaller town in Brazil.

The food is good, they have different ingredients and the result is positive. He dessert was very good! I ate a "pudim de leite condensado com raspas de laranja" and my husband an ice cream with caramelised bananas which were delicious! The service was a negative point because we waited too much time to be served.

.This is a very popular place with an outstanding Brazilian buffet. The food was all excellent and included many non traditional dishes including risotto, quesadillas, and several fish dishes. It's impossible to try everything but I liked all that I did try. It's a typical Brazilian buffet where you serve yourself and they weigh the plate. Drinks are available from the servers. This place also has a wonderful desserts buffet and we tried a few of the delicious calorie-laden offerings.

We are very much interested in beers and after a whole afternoon looking for good beers in Tiradentes without success, we decided to give ourselves a last shot at a place in São João del Rey that we found about at the internet. We couldn't be more right on our choice! The owners, Ana and Fernanda are amazing, they make you feel immediately comfortable, as you would be at your neighborhood bar and the beers... their beer menu puts to shame most bars in São Paulo e Rio! If you are in São João de Rey, do yourself a favor, don't miss this experience. But, if you are in Tiradentes, then my friend, go to São João and ask Ana something to help you to forget and overcome the tourist hordes and be happy at Empório del Rei.

Taberna d'Omar

Reviewed By Ramesh27

It was sunday, and we were recommended, to stop by and peek in at the restaurant called Taberna d'Omar, on the street corner in front of the church... however, the atmosphere was brutally irresistible, and we just HAD to stay. For those not familiar with Brazil, a couple of decades ago, it was quite popular to have sunday morning in small bars with live music playing, of a particular type of brazilian style known as "chorinho". It is part of the "bohemian bar culture", and now harder to find, as it is usually only the older generation that appreciates it, and the youngsters are not learning to play it. It is 100% brazil, and culture, and traditionally, only to be found on sundays. To our surprise, the place was packed, and a band was playing chorinho, so nobody was inclined on leaving... but we got a spot in the restaurant. So that is the cultural "background" of the scene... in a restaurant in a historic colonial-style building, in front of the square of the church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Carmel), which could be seen from the huge colonial windows. That not being enough, the food was just as good as the rest of the setting: in other words, a journey to paradise! Yes, in this small spot, we managed to forget where we were, and what was happening in the world, as it created its own world of music and food, combined with overworked, but extremely friendly staff. The food was great, the salads fresh, the meals prepared with care.If you manage to visit Sao Joao del Rei over the weekend, save your sunday for the lunch or luncheon break here - you will not regret it!
