Where to eat Barbecue food in San Ignacio: The Best Restaurants and Bars

Reviews on Barbecue food in San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize. It’s true: parts of Belize are getting touristy. But San Ignacio remains rustic, making it a great base for budget-friendly tropical adventure travel. Canoe on the Macal River, or walk to Mayan ruins at Cahal Pec (just be warned: it's uphill).

Initially seen advertised on social media, good photos. Place is quite small.Visited for lunch, the menu is not that extensive and nothing really that stands out.Party of 4 that had burgers and shrimp.Food took 35 mins to be served, nothing spectacular so may be good for an outing out of the norm but nothing a place you would routinely keep going back to.

Ham's Barbecue

Ham's offers awesome and authentic TX style BBQ in the Cayo District of Belize. They are very conveniently located along the highway outside San Ignacio, so you you might be able to stop in on your way to/from the airport, zoo, Mayan tours, caves, ziplining, etc. My wife and I spent a wonderful 9 days in Belize seeing all the sights and we ate at Ham's three times. Besides their convenient location, clean restrooms, and friendly service, they offer the most important thing of all: great tasting and high quality food! We had the pulled pork and beef brisket sandwiches. Once we ate at Ham's location and the other times we just grabbed sandwiches to go, very convenient indeed. The have ice cold drinks and offer the extremely tasty Hot Mama's brand Belizean made hot sauces. (Try the Manganero! OMG) They are in the same location as the Hot Mama's factory, so you might be able to get a tour depending on when you stop by.Steven offers a really friendly and high quality food establishment. While there are many places to get great local food, for sheer convenience, taste and something different (or a taste from home) you really ought to stop by and have a bite!!

We passed by a big sign that said South Texas BBQ and thought we'd give it a try since we're from South Texas. They were out of everything we wanted on the menu. I think we ordered 2 or 3 times and each time our waitress come back to tell us they were out. Eventually we decided on something else - I believe it was brisket? Either was it was fatty with very little edible meat. The beans were good though. The BBQ sauce was okay tasting as well. Maybe they were having a bad day, but I wouldn't recommend.

Boiton's BarBQ

This is a tiny place by the road where you eat excellent BBQ chicken + tortilla + sauce for Bz$5 or with backed beans and coleslaw Bz$8 Good for budget travellers

Having tested three spots in the area, we've decided that nothing can match state-side BBQ. What you get is a quarter of a chicken, no pulled pork or chicken, and no brisket. Chicken here is over-grilled and chewy. Order dark meat rather than white. The price is reasonable at $5 Belizean but there's not much meat on the chicken either. And the BBQ sauce? It's red, but no flavor. Of the spots available on the drag, Boiton's is probably as good as it gets. It's just not what we expected or hoped for.

Mom's Backyard Restaurant & Bar

Stopped here after checking out a few other local spots and Mom's seemed to give more wings for the money. The waitress moved very slow and seemed like to she did not want to be there. Asked if they had internet, the waitress said yes and then walked away without providing the wifi info. The food took a while to be served but the wings with the barbecue sauce were very good. My friend ordered a Belikin off the menu and the waitress made sure she verbally added that the price went up 50 cents. Overall, we would eat stop here again for the wings but the service could definitely be improved upon.

Although the staff were new and things were a little disorganized at first, our overall experience was good. The burgers continue to be absolutely delicious ( I had been craving one for days before we finally got there) and the pork ribs were just as good as they have ever been. Portions are always generous and we have never left here hungry. If we have one suggestion, it is to make the menu clearer - the burger additions list an egg and cheese as extras. When my burger came last time, it had an egg on it (I don't eat eggs and some people are allergic so this could be a problem), so this time I specified no egg. It does not say that all burgers come with eggs, so clarify this if you are ordering. Also, there were 6 of us and we reserved a table. When we got there, the table was pushed against a wall, so we had to sit 4 along one side and one at each end - not great for conversation. The table behind us was set up somewhat the same. We wanted to speak to the owner about our concerns but he wasn't there when we left.
