Lancaster's BBQ

From humble beginnings in a small former gas station, Lancaster's BBQ was born in Race City, USA (otherwise known as Mooresville, NC). The year was 1986 and our slow-smoked, real eastern NC BBQ and race memorabilia quickly became legendary. Owners Jeff an

Mooresville has a lot of BBQ, but this is my favorite. We've hosted many work and social functions and everyone always requests Lancaster's BBQ for their return visit. Even my 94--year-old mother wants it when she comes to visit. Eat at the restaurant and you get the added benefit of a race-themed fun place for adults and kids alike. If you're in the area touring race shops this is perfect for lunch or dinner

W Plaza Drive is a small side street running off Route 150 west bound in Mooresville. Enter Sonny's lot from W Plaza Drive. Check my photos for the operating hours. Sonny's has a drive thru and they cater to large groups. I saw booth booth seating and tables and chairs. They do have high chairs available. There is plenty of parking and plenty of seating. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is well kept. Every table is supplied with plenty of various barbeque sauces. The salad bar offers a wide choice of fruits and vegetable--the shield protects well at a low level but makes it somewhat difficult to reach the salad bins. The tables at the booths are stationery so a big person may want to choose table and chair seating. Sonny's caters to parties of 50 or more but requests advance phone call. They offer some gluten free items. They offer sign up for promos (like the birthday coupon we used). Sonny's is one of the best bar-b-ques around.

I've been wanting to try this restaurant for some time now but with their hours, it's hard unless you're already in Mooresville. For example, lunch only on Monday through Wednesday and only evening hours on Thursday and Fridays. Saturday and Sunday's closed.Happen to be in Mooresville around lunch time about a week ago and for a change, timing worked out. This restaurant has been many things since we moved here 20+ years ago. The most recent a Groucho's Deli. Major renovation and remodel and I must say that when I walked through the front door, I was impressed.Nice clean lines and an atmosphere appealing to BBQ lovers everywhere although I will admit, the walls do not carry the patina of years of build up smoky BBQ.Family owned and run it appears and on the day I was there, some of the next generation appeared to be helping out. Everything was very professional and I did not want for service the whole time I was there.Studied the menu while I was at the front counter and ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich with a side of Fries and Tea.Took my tea and found a nice seat and waited although the wait was not long.My lunch was out shortly in a very reasonable time. Nice presentation, simple but good BBQ does not need a fancy presentation because it speaks for itself.I love good BBQ and the meat here is some of the best I have encountered. Nice and meaty with a good smoke flavor and very moist and not dried out. Perfect Que.Problem is I love Eastern NC BBQ and the contrast that a good Pepper Vinegar gives to the natural sweetness of the meat. They had a what the called a Vinegar Sauce on the table which did not taste like Vinegar not did it have any Peppery kick either. Tried on of the other three sauces on the table and while it had more kick, the primary note was a Memphis Style very sweet sauce.Pair this sandwich with the right sauce and it can't be beat. Granted I have my opinion about taste and the first thing in a good BBQ is the meat and this place nails that. Second is the the Sauce and needs work to please me but other may find a sauce to their liking.Fries need a bit of work. Cut back the temp on the fryer. Outside of the fry is beautiful is a nice golden brown with a good crunch but inside of the fry is still almost raw. Cut back the temperature, extend the time by 10 to 15 seconds or so and give the center of the fry, time to get to temperature and cook. This has the potential to be a great BBQ Restaurant. The meat shows a commitment to the Art of the BBQ and they have done a great job here. Second part is putting up with us picky Eastern NC BBQ Style fanatics. Now that I know what to choose and what to avoid, I will be back and I do recommend to anyone who loves BBQ to give them a try. Only caveat is that if you are an Eastern NC Style lover, chose well.
