Things to do in Bear
My husband and I have passed this roadside BBQ stand several times on Route 13, on our way to the New Castle Farmer's Market. Early in the morning, when we pass by, you can smell the BBQ Smoker at work. It smells divine & really makes you hungry. After smelling it a few times, we vowed to stop in here one day for lunch. So, the other day we passed by on our way back from the farmers market again. This time we decided to stop. From the outside it just looks like an old car repair shop. You can see the BBQ smoker next to the road & a small picnic table out front. It doesn't look like anything special, but the smell is very enticing. Once inside, we were a little worried. It looked like an old run down quickie-mart. There were some refrigerated & freezer cases filled with various items. It was very dark inside & just looked a little dingy. It didn't look dirty, but definately needs some sprucing up! There was an ordering counter with a menu posted on the wall & a few trays of meat on the countertop behind the ordering counter. There was one lady working the counter & a gentleman outside next to the BBQ smoker. There was NO inside dining & only the one or two picnic tables outside. Really the place was nothing special to look at. Inside we looked at the menu that consisted of ribs, short beef ribs, bbq pork & chicken kabobs, chickens, chicken wings, turkey legs/wings, beef brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork, kielbasa, spare rib sandwich, smoked Italian sausage & a few side items (potato salad, cole slaw, macaroni salad). You could order the shredded meat by the pound as well as by the sandwich. We also saw tamales laying in the countertop. We decided to try the pulled pork sandwich ($4.50) & the bbq chicken kabob ($2.50). However, the lady told us she did NOT have any chicken kabobs at that time. So we ended up just getting a pulled pork sandwich to-go. Within minutes we were being handed our sandwich rolled up in aluminum foil. Overall our experience with Balan's was OK. The building is nothing to look at. I think it could use some sprucing up inside. It really had us worried. The outside picnic table was nice, but they need more. They only have one, maybe two picnic tables. The sandwich was GOOD & that is what mattered most! The sandwich was decent in size for the price & the flavor was good. It was just a tad smoky & the bbq sauce was pretty good. It was not too tangy or sweet. Plus they were generous with the amount of sauce on the sandwich. The meat was a little tough since it was big chunks of meat instead of finely shredded. But, we still enjoyed it. IF you want a good BBQ sandwich for the road, it is a good stop. IF you want a dining room, frills OR a waitress...then keep on driving. Since you can order meat by the pound, it might be a good place to get BBQ for a picnic or family event/party. We will visit it again as the food was good, but we hope to see some improvement in the atmosphere & interior space next time. Note: OPENS EARLY--open at 10am weekdays (9am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Closes at 7pm daily (except 8pm on Friday & Saturday).

Maybe I'm spoiled, but this place doesn't measure up to what I'm used to in barbeque. There just isn't the smokiness in the taste of the meat that I expect. I had a combo with beef brisket and sliced pork; both below standards in that regard. I was warned that the mac and cheese was hot because it had jalopenos in it; there was a bit of twang which was nice, but it sure wasn't what I would call hot. And serving sizes weren't particularly big either. I know its a chain, but compare this to say Red Hot and Blue and you'll see what I'm writing about. Craft beer selection was poor. I wanted a low alcohol craft beer (say 4-5%); they had none. So I went beerless.Service was pretty good.
