Where to eat Bar food in Dominical: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 21, 2020 Vivienne Hutton

Find out what Bar restaurants to try in Dominical. Surf, dive, snorkel, beach comb, horseback ride, bicycle, or relax in a hammock in Dominical. Take a stress-relieving yoga class at Bamboo YogaPlay. Enjoy beach restaurants serving up everything from East Indian curries and Italian pastas and pizzas to local gallo pinto and shots of anise-infused sugarcane liquor. Savor lonely beaches populated by pelicans, frigate birds, brown boobies, and hardy surfers here for the waves and good beachfront food at reasonable prices. When you’ve caught up on your sleep and feel relaxed, take the family on a hike to the double-cascade waterfall at Nauyaca. Perhaps the family would be up for a horseback gallop on the beach, or a trot to a smaller waterfall like Pazo Azul, whose plunge pool is popular with local kids. There is always boogie boarding at Playa Dominicalito. Or beachcombing and dolphin-watching at Playa Dominical. Guided bird-watching, and mangrove estuary and rainforest tours are always educational. Charter a fishing boat. Catch and release big sailfish like marlin in the deep sea, or keep some tasty dinner fish like red snapper, yellowfin tuna, snook, wahoo, and dorado. In Marino Bellena National Park, humpback whales migrate south towards Dominical to escape the Arctic cold. December to April is the humpback whale mating season in Ballena (Whale) Marine National Park. May to November is the nesting season, when Olive Ridley and Hawksbill turtles do their nocturnal egg-laying on the beaches. Low tide beach combing walks can take you out to Punta Uvita Tombolo island. Snorkel, dive, and explore mangrove habitats. Or just sit with the family on the gold and white sands watching green marine iguanas sunbathe between dives into the rocks and corals to feed on marine algae.

We arrived to Dominical very late due to flight delays and all of our fave restaurants were closed. We were starving and exhausted. One of the locals told us that Rum Bar was now serving food. If you've been to Dominical before, you know this place as a bar right on the entrance to the main street. Being exhausted and tired, we wondered in seeking quite literally anything to eat. To our surprise, we were greeted by a super nice guy behind the food counter who made me a custom veggie quesadilla - which was great. My husband got the chicken tacos and he said they were "really good and fresh"( and he is a tough critic ). He also made us the best homemade french fries Ive had in a long time. Remember, its a bar. There is no atmosphere except the bar and pool tables. There are places to sit both inside and out. Its not fancy and there is no table service ( you order at the counter ) but we were happily surprised by the level of food and I would go back for the french fries alone.

Very casual atmosphere with a pool table and a foosball table. Wasn't very crowded when my boyfriend & I were there, but the food was pretty good - the nachos were GREAT.

Bar y Restaurante El Coco

We have been there 3 or 4 times. All the times the food and service was decent, nothing espectacular, but we liked mostly because of the location. The first time we were served by an adult guy, who looked and act like the owner. He acted very nice, but at the end, when we got the bill, we just received a handwritten paper with the total amount. We mentally calculated and it seemed wrong, so we went to the cashier and ask for the details. On other handwritten bill (the one that the server/owner writes himself and give to the cashier) it was written down some items that we didn't order at all. We clarified the misunderstanding (which sometimes can happen, you know), and the owner dissapeared, not apologies, but that's fine, it was 50% chance that it was a mistake. So we decided to go back a 2nd time, asking again for the bill at the end, little "mistakes" again, like changing the prices from the menu. The third and LAST time we were also charged like 4 times for the drink that only 1 person ordered. Every drink had added extra colones on the price (more than showed in the menu). The cashier (a mature lady who didn't act very nicely) quickly calculated the new total and gave us the total, but we calculated ourselves and the total was wrong again, of course over charging. This time we definetely left with the feeling of being ripped off. I hate dishonest people, and no matter if you food or service is good, if you are trying to rip your customers off, that is NOT CORRECT. Also, not giving proper invoices is illegal. I didn't mind that the food was overall, or even if the server didn't check on us. What really matter for me is the HONESTY, for locals, for tourists, just be fair and honest on your bussiness and you will have success. Otherwise, keep stealing from your customers who TRUST YOU, when you give them the total amount handwritten. Every dollar or colon you are stealing from your customers, actually you are stealing to yourself. And this is for all, for the owner (s), cashier and servers, because they were all involved on these dodgy/tricky transactions during all the 3 times we went there. Hoping you get honest, starting paying your taxes, giving receipts to your customers, so they can check that everything is correct, and RESPECT THE BUSSINESS. For people like you, the customers start to be distrustful. Ps. I can see that this restaurant also have very bad reviews from last year regarding the same issue (overcharging), and I'm not surprised.Buenas Noches! Gracias por su opinión! We visited Tortilla Flats on our second day. I literally fell in love with the atmosphere, the view, and the PASSION FRUIT BASIL MARGARITA. I am not a fruity or sweet drink person, but this was amazing! So amazing I returned nearly daily for another, haha. We tried a couple of the appetizers and one lunch while there as well and really liked the food. We prefer to sit at the bar and banter with the friendly bartenders. The seats are also higher for a better view of Dominical Beach. There are local vendors set up close by and tourists passing. It's a great place for people watching and just relaxing for a bit.
