The Kings Head

The Kings Head is a traditional village pub in Gunnerside in Swaledale North Yorkshire. We offer a good selection of real ales and excellent freshly cooked meals.

Busy on a Bank Holiday Sunday evening, yet the service is still snappy and smiley. Our curry and scampi constituted good, wholesome food served in generous portions - the King’s Head does not claim to be a gastropub, thank goodness. The cellar is well kept, and the cheery bar staff are tolerant of dogs and children - and as we saw for ourselves this evening, they grit their teeth and get on with the job even when dealing with curt holidaymakers.

Our experience was very good when our party of 4 visited the Farmer’s Arms for an early evening dinner. I always recommend the Giant Yorkshire Puddings with several choices of fillings. The prawn salad is also good. At this time of year there’s a lovely fire to cosy up to. This pub hasn’t changed in the 9 years we’ve been visiting - not even the menu - which is what we like so much about it.

After a day visiting Aysgarth Falls and the Wensleydale cheese factory we had a lovely walk around Hawes Village browsing the shops. Before heading off to Blacksheep Brewery in Masham we called in here for a drink. My friend and I chose a pint of Barista Stout from Theakstons. It was delicious. We would definitely come back for another pint if we are in the area again.

Four out of six in our party ordered the fish and chips, and it was excellent. I can see how other reviewers might have encountered the landlord when he may have been grumpier, because he may have been stressed out about something, but he was perfectly pleasant when we met him to pay our dinner bill. We were amused to note that all the dinner checks are hand-written -- not computerized -- and that there are spikes on the wall to put bills/checks, based on what section of the dining room the order needs to go -- very old-fashioned, but appropriate in a public house in the country!

Staying at a campsite a few miles away in the neighboring dale, decided to pop into Hawes for a family evening meal.Lovely central pub. Quite traditional with the whole fireplace and hand-pulled ales theme. However the food is the star of the show. Not saying we went in with low expectations, but we basically picked it randomly so hadn't given the food quality much thought. The food was easily the standard that decent restaurants charge considerably more for. My wife had the lamb (a favorite of hers) and with no sense of hyperbole, thought it was one of the best lamb meals she had EVER eaten. My seafood dish was also excellent and our four year old ate up all of his fish and chips. Can't be 100% certain but find it exceedingly hard to believe anywhere in town can match this place for quality. Service was also excellent, atmosphere very pleasant and prices quite reasonable. Can confidently say we will only be eating here when we return! Considerable compliments to all involved!

We received the warmest of welcomes to this lovely hotel. Our rooms were huge and well equipped with very generous supplies of great biscuits as well as tea, coffee and hot chocolate. This is a wonderful location from which to explore Wensleydale, just walking distance to the stunning Falls and a short drive to see red squirrels. The Latvian waitress in the morning looked after us really well, with a great choice of breakfast and the dinner menu is superb, we loved the lamb, grouse and sea trout. This is one of the most caring places I've ever stayed.

Food pretty average here, some of the dishes we had okay, others poor. It is a good pub environment, but I wouldn't eat here again. The chef wondered into the eating area a couple of times (not to talk to the customers I hasten to add) with his trouser hanging so low, he was showing lots of crack, sort of off putting.

We visited mid-week and had the giant Yorkshire pudding with Cumberland sausage, the gammon, egg and pineapple and the fish and chips. The food was freshly cooked and very tasty although quite basic pub grub. Very good portions especially the gammon and eggs. Good selection of beers. Seating quite basic. Dogs are welcome.
