Balti Mahal

Reviewed By PaulMcElhinney

My good lady and I were going to a theatre production in Droitwich so we googled restaurants in the area that participated in the Meerkat Meals deal, 2 for 1. This brought up about five restaurants in Worcester one of which was Balti Mahal. We arrived at about 6.15pm and took a table for two. We asked the waiter about the Meerkat deal. "Oh no we don't do that, we're not sure how we ended up on that website." (I shall be telling the administrators.) My partner had a prawn curry dish with rice, I went for my usual tandoori chicken biriyani. My partner's curry contained either three or four prawns. I expected a nice diced chicken breast. Instead I had what appeared to be bits of leg meat and wing. It really was poor. So disappointing. I had a biryani on Monday at a "pub Indian" near to Sandwell and Dudley train station, it was £8 and amazing. The rest of the dish was nice, rice, veg', spices and herbs, the meat just wasn't right. In hindsight I wish I'd suggested that I should pay for a veg' biryani. The bill for two meals and two cokes came to £24. No tip - crap.

Longevity in a restaurant is always a good sign. Shiny new places are all well and good but walk down the same street 6 months later and there’s an excellent chance the shine, and the restaurant, may have gone.Ashley’s is neither shiny or new. I first started coming here at least 20 years ago and judging by the decor it had been serving excellent curry to the good people of Worcester for some time already. My most recent visit came after a hiatus of a few years so I was pleased to find that the place had changed little (redecorated, but some time ago) and the food was as good as ever and still reasonably priced. One thing that had changed was the alcohol license - they now have one. I have no idea when this revolutionary step occurred but Ashley’s is all the better for it.Other reviewers have pronounced Ashley’s as the best curry house in Worcester. I haven’t eaten in them all so I can’t comment but certainly they must be doing something right to have been around for so long. The decor may be a bit tired but the service is good and a balti at Ashley’s is as good as you’ll find anywhere outside of Birmingham. If you can have such a thing, Ashley’s is a good, old fashioned, curry house. Splendid.

Rajkot Restaurant, Worcester

Reviewed By Jon_Hemphill

We were a party of 8 last Saturday evening, we had reserved a table and this was ready for us as we arrived. It was a very busy night but it was also obvious from the moment of arrival that the restaurant wanted to capitalise on the level of demand and move people through and out as quickly as possible.Almost before we had sat down we were addressed by one of the waiters (very dark black hair and black thick glasses) for how many popadoms we wanted and what we wanted to drink, we asked for a few moments to decide. He then returned and took our order. On the menu food listed under Main Course it says they come with rice. Four of our party ordered from the Main Course section so we were expecting 4 rice dishes to accompany them, we checked this with our waiter who confirmed this was correct. We also ordered 2 extra rice dishes so we would have 6 between the 8 of us.When the meals arrived my wife was the first to remark as to how small the dishes were, and she is not a big eater. Then we realised that NO rice side dishes had arrived and so we asked about them, we were told they were just coming, they never did. We asked again, and again and eventually the 2 extra rice dishes arrived but no sign of the 4 that should have come with the main course dishes. However by this time most of us had eaten most of the small portions put in front of us using different breads and not waiting for the rice to arrive. One of our party had ordered Monk fish as her main and that had not arrived and so we asked where it was. Again we were told it was just coming, it wasn't and it didn't well not until almost the end of the night when the other 7 in the party had finished their meals and the lady expecting the fish dish had helped her husband with his because she was so hungry, but given the dish was small that wasn't a lot to share. When they did bring the Monk fish we refused to accept it, as we were about to leave the restaurant, and sent it back. We also asked to speak to the manager and explained the issues we had faced to him. He apologised and said he would knock the cost of the rice and the Monk fish off our bill - this was remarkably good of him when you think WE HAD NEVER HAD THEM so he was not knocking anything off he was just charging us for what we had had and offering nothing in the sway of compensation which had turned out to be an awful night. One of our party did mention this to him when we were leaving and he did, after a lot of persuading, offer us a bottle of sparkling wine to take with us.You should also know that one of our party, who travels to India a great deal with his work, rated the food 6/10 at the very best.Very disappointing, we wont be returning and would advise others the shop around for other Indian restaurants in Worcester

We had a very enjoyable meal here. Interestingly, the 'usual' tray of chutneys etc to go with forthcoming poppadoms were already present on all tables. The service was very quick, efficient and exceptionally friendly, it's always nice to be treated as a valued customer. We shared a chicken saag with a vegetable balti with a plain rice and a plain naan. This was more the enough to satisfy our appetites. Afterwards, it was a nice surprise to get ice cream, a Tia Maria topped with cream and some sweets - all on the house!Thank you for taking the time to post your kind comments. Do come see us again next time you are visiting Worcester.
