My wife and I have visited the cafe at the Young Museum site on many occasions and through several different incarnations. I must say we were very pleased with the Green Ivy. The coffee was lucious and the egg and bacon rolls delicious. Egg, heaps of bacon, tasty cheese and tomato relish on a sesame bun. We will be back.

I had not been back there since it had changed hands and the previous establishment on this site was great. While the new owners still have a little way to go to get their Jam stocks up the product itself was very good and I purchased 12 bottles of various Jams and relish's.A very nice airy and large restaurant with a good menu which was backed up by the food being of great quality when it came.Service was good and of course this site occupies a great area to view Young.

Urban Retreat

The Urban Retreat is newly opened within what was formally a Pub, and so there was ample space for the wide wrap-around servery, the open lounge and table / seating areas, the function / meeting room, and the indoor childrens' play area that now exists within this renovated coffee shop / restaurant. We came for a mid-morning meal with the grandkids, who were delighted to use the play area under our oversight, while we had the big breakfast, pancakes, and coffees. Our meals were very good, with sensibly sized servings and thankfully no "fillers" such as chips and rocket that usually, and in our opinion inappropriately adorn breakfast meals. The menu seems to be largely Australian, and while mostly traditional, that's not a bad thing particularly in an establishment that's feeling its way. It's not easy to find this place because the entry is within a courtyard type area left off the main street (Boorowa St) footpath heading west, and just before Lynch Street.Look for the black on white "Urban Retreat" sign under the footpath awning and give these people a try - because they are trying something a little different.

Commercial Hotel Bistro

At least the Commercial looks nice. The dining room’s a bit boring but is in good condition, there are some lounges nearby, a decent courtyard, and a front bar with high tables that probably gets rowdy, judging by the “no jagerbombs or depth charges” sign, and also by the drunk people there at 6pm. So the design and cleaning people should be commended but the service staff are surly and the management’s bad. They were out of some of the menu items (despite being right at the start of service on a Saturday night), they didn’t have any rosé wine, and when they offered a dry red, I assumed that they were reading that description off a bottle but what we got was sweet and fruity rather than dry. The food was mostly bad - chewy salt and pepper squid with very little salt and pepper and chewy creamy garlic prawns that had not been thawed enough before cooking. At least the chips were good, crispy with a decent beer batter. I was disappointed with the Services Club yesterday but the Commercial was worse in every way except the fitout - worse service, worse organisation, worse food, higher prices.

Young Services Club

Reviewed By mrdom

Part of the club’s main area has comfy chairs and could be a good place for a remarkably cheap drink, especially with very friendly and effective staff, but it’s still a large noisy club space. The food’s expensive and ordinary. My cajun chicken was fairly dry, had little cajun taste, the mango salsa’s mango was likely out of a jar, the chips were crispy but had a dense interior, suggesting that they had not been thawed for long enough, and the salad had pasta all over it. Combine the stodgy food with Young’s hatred of walking (there are good footpaths but NO pedestrian crossings or traffic lights, despite main roads going right through the middle, and angry stencils everywhere telling pedestrians to give way) and you can guess the girth of the average customer. Maybe that was the reason for the odd smell pervading the club.

Cafe De Jour

We were in Young for the weekend and several locals had recommended Cafe De Jour. Upon arrival the first thing you notice is how widely spaced the tables are - no banging elbows or contending with unwanted conversations from the next table. The service from Kelly was wonderful - knowledgeable and passionate about their business and the area. The food was amazing. One of the best meals we have eaten away from much pricier and renown establishments. If anywhere near Young, this restaurant is worth a visit.
