Things to do in Penrith
So my friends and I were descending to Penrith for a joint 30th and staying in neighbouring Hillside House. I was in charge of organising the weekend away so had booked everything from; train tickets, to transfers from the train to the house and back, to catering and finally a return trip to the pub and back on the last night. I originally phoned some weeks before our reservation to check if all 15 of us could be accommodated and the landlord seemed the nicest, most accommodating man in the world, just duly asked that should it be confirmed that we let him know we were coming so he could put on extra staff. Fine! Dutifully the week before, when I was dotting the I'd and crossing the t's of our trip I called and reserved our booking for 15. Sunday lunch? He asked. No, we will be in a bit later, around 8:15pm. ok he said it will be Thai food then. Sitting in the bar ok? Fine! Booked the coach and arrived the following Sunday, everyone present and correct (not easy in a large group) on time to the pub 'welcomed' by the landlord claiming he had no knowledge of our booking or indeed our entire conversation. He claimed that we had the wrong place. So there's another Crown Hotel in Eamont that serves Thai food? No he replied. Anyway he took us in and the food was fine and we were £23 each for a main, a Jaegermeister and two drinks each. It was soured by his insistence that I had got this wrong, which he repeated as he put down my plate of red curry and to my friends when they ordered drinks at the bar - which offended me as it was my word against his. You see he was called from a Glasgow number, re: a reservation for 15 which I'm sure in his small, remote pub you would remember. Anyway I did not have the call log on my phone as I had called from the office which is why I have posted the attached to the landlord and to the two bob locals that tried to refute my booking. What did I speak to him about for 36 seconds then? The weather?! Worth a visit for a budget friendly tale to tell - the chef or landlady was particularly comical as she had taken a fancy to my friend Marisa!

Visited here when we first moved to the area. Slow service , Very basic menus and takeaway. Food quality not amazing , tasteless and did not stay hot for long for our drive home (unlike others that do). Would not recommend or go back!

Telephoned from Temple Sowerby, 6 miles out of town centre, to double check if delivery available. On hold for some time but was then advised it was available. Studied menu for 5 mins before calling back to place order only to be told no delivery to Temple Sowerby available. Then on questioning this, conversation had by staff who then said it was available and there would be a £10 delivery charge!!! How can that cost be justified? Very disappointed at mixed messages and extortionate delivery charges...didn't place order.

We visited on our last night and lived to regret it.Only decent thing was the papadums and dips followed by a gradual decline in meagre offerings.Sharing starter was inadequate and tasteless Main dishes were mediocre, the final straw was a poor excuse for a lamb biryani which looked like poop on a plate.Needless to say by this time Iâd had enough. At least they took the offending item off my bill ;nevertheless I regret going and donât plan to return any time soon.

Ordered two meals for Saturday night tea. Delivery took over an hour and also cost me the princely some of £5.50. My wife never alters her order King Prawn Dhansak. This offering was inedible for some reason and binned. Mine, Chicken Jalfrezi was fine though I needed to microwave it as it was cold. Meals are in my opinion getting poorer and poorer from here. Will not be using place again. £24.85 for two curries and rice and one nan bread delivered seems at the top end.

Hidden away in a courtyard I had no idea this place existed despite being a regular visitor to Penrith. Friendly staff and we enjoyed a delicious meal. We will definitely return.

A small, friendly family run authentic Thai restaurant. With over twenty years experience in Thai cuisine. Everything is prepared on the premises and our menu includes a wide range of vegetarian and gluten free items. Fully licensed with 50 covers. Partie
Saw the great reviews on here and decided to have our anniversary meal at Bangkok Bistro. Big disappointment. As soon as we walked in and said "hi", only to be met with a surly look from a disgruntled teenager in a totally empty restaurant, we knew we had chosen the wrong place. It didn't get any better from there. Service was bordering on rude - we were lucky to get a grunt out of the young girl who obviously didn't want to be there and was probably covering for someone else. Ordered a main each, and after 15-20 minutes one arrived, followed by another 15 minute wait before the other did. Not really what you hope for on a romantic dinner! They were out of juice so ended up having tap water. Atmosphere was non-existent; at one point the music abruptly stopped for about ten minutes and the restaurant was totally silent other than us (no one else was in there). Waitress was mostly absent and the manager, who was pleasant and friendly, didn't appear until we were leaving. There was no apology for the fact that the meal was delayed and there was a mix up with what we ordered from the menu. Two stars because the food was actually tasty and the restaurant itself clean and pleasant, if totally dead and unwelcoming. We wouldn't mind the poor service if it had been busy, but we were the only diners in there. A couple of poor souls came to collect their takeaways and were forced to endure the morgue-like atmosphere with us for a good 10-15 minutes. We couldn't help laughing! We don't like leaving bad reviews and clearly we came at a bad time (?!) but seriously - terrible vibes.

The Raj is in the former Cagneyâs Tandoori property .. which had some admin issues but otherwise was a great Penrith restaurant. Thus evening we wanted a fast and efficient- quality meal so we could get to the cinema. How did it turn out?Wandering in we are used to being greeted... sadly we were ignored and had to find someone who was interested in us. We were shown to a table but in the overflow part of the restaurant even though it wasnât busy. Tucked away and forgotten. Eventually a drinks order was taken but our choice of beer was no longer served. Then why not change the menu!!!The starter was fairly quick and tasty but then the wait for the main course ... with later arrivals eating well before we did... we had to rush in the end to get to the cinema. Poor service and no communication spoilt the otherwise good food ... turns out itâs more of a takeaway than sit down ... but not to look at ... so that took the chefâs attention obviously!Wonât go again. 3 is a fair rating as 2.5 isnât there.

Had a gorgeous meal tonight (as always) - Popadoms and chutney tray followed by a fabulous King Prawn Madras with rice while Brian had Chicken Tikka Balti and his usual Cheese Naan (delicious beyond words) The expected excellent and swift service was as it always is with the smashing Shaek at the helm. Another superb feast. Never fails to satisfy
