Things to do in Langford

Since coming to Langford a few years ago, I admit to having a perverse curiosity with the Golden Lion. After seeing on this site and others that it is apparently the worst overall restaurant in town I was even more intrigued. That curiosity only continued to grow after my partner gave me a bit of history on the place. She noted that, once upon a time (the 1990s), Golden Lion was THE place to go for Chinese food in the area. On weekends the parking lot would be packed, the phones would be ringing off the hook and, perhaps most important, the food was really good. Getting many a take-out order or dining in was the norm. Then, in the mid-2000s things began to change: There were inspection issues at one point and the quality began to slip. Food started to taste extremely oily; the chicken was all gristle and therefore inedible; anything deep fried was saturated in grease; most folks would just throw their food in the trash. So, I was asked, âwhy would you want to go there and waste your money? Itâs terrible!â And, online Iâd see reviews with phrases like âDripping grease;â âVERY GREASY;â âTerrible, terrible, terrible;â âFeeling gross and sick;â and âHands down the most disgusting Chinese food Iâve ever had.â Ohhh. . . now this is really starting to catch my interest! I simply MUST check this place out and see for myself! That fateful day came in August 2017 when my partner reluctantly took me to Golden Lion for some food.Admittedly, I was like a kid in a candy store approaching the restaurant! The worn down, chipped up âGolden Lionâ site was beckoning! There were a few cars in the parking lot, but we quickly discovered that these were all worker cars. Once inside, what were the first impressions? Well, the staff person was cleaning, which is good. The (rather large and open) space appeared to be clean and it was quiet â we were the only ones in the restaurant (though, as we were finishing up, an older couple did come in). The tables were clean â not sticky like at a different Chinese eatery Iâve been to. We decided to keep the order a little on the lighter side just in case the food was as terrible as most of the earlier reviews seem to suggest: we ordered two eggrolls and the prawns tipan. The eggrolls, when they arrived, looked like your standard Westernized Chinese food; however, I will admit they werenât good. They were greasy and tasteless; even the plum sauce could hardly save these things. Were they the worst eggrolls Iâve had? No, Iâve had far worst elsewhere (weâre talking eggrolls literally SWIMMING in grease). What about the prawns tipan? While the presentation was a little different than what Iâve seen for other versions of this dish, it was, overall, pretty decent. There was a good ratio of vegetables to prawn; the tepan sauce was plentiful; and it was actually âsizzling.â My one fault with this dish? A couple of the prawns still had their âveinâ inside them. While the vein doesnât make the prawn unsafe to eat, for most of us itâs still unappetizing to see this dark line running down the prawn. Most places tend to remove this for you.So, I have to say, Iâm not sure where all of the hate is coming from for this place. Was it the best Chinese food Iâve had? Far from it, but it certainly wasnât the worst. The servers were friendly and the food we ordered was decent. They also seem to do a pretty booming phone-in and takeout service because, while we were sitting in the restaurant, a lot of people phoned in and picked up orders, so some people obviously really like this place.FOOD: 3/5SERVICE: 3.5/5VALUE: 3/5RECOMMENDATION: Maybe we played it smart in not ordering anything deep-fried, less the eggroll (which did suck). I didnât order any chow mein because, letâs be honest here, chow mein is pretty bland/tasteless at most Westernized Chinese eateries and I suspect it would be no different here. Perhaps if Iâd ordered deep-fried prawns or almond chicken, Iâd be writing a different review. Nonetheless, what we ordered was decent. In terms of an actual recommendation, though, I would say try at your own risk just because of the vastly negative reviews this place has received rightly or wrongly.
Wow! A lil gem of a place in Langford's Goldstream Village tucked away beside City Hall. Rolls are delicious, and artfully made with care and attention. We ordered Tuna Toro Roll, Salmon Cowboy, and Dynamite and all were very good. Not huge in size but intentional so every bite is fresh, flavourful and just right. Prices are appropriate for well made sushi. Menu is limited, making preparation manageable for the lone sushi chef. Can see how this place could get busy with only two staff members working. Restaurant is tiny, quaint and clean, and service is friendly and attentive - the couple are nice, hardworking people and genuinely care about the experience offered to customers visiting their restaurant. There were only two tables occupied when we visited on a Tuesday evening, with many people stopping in for take-out. We noticed everyone else were "regulars" on a first name basis with the owners. Can't wait to go back and be regulars ourselves! Definitely worth a visit.

We visited the Asian Noodle House in August after reading the online reviews and we were so happy we didn't turn away upon seeing the slightly dodgy exterior. We ordered a family meal for 4 people which cost less than $11 per person. The wonton soup was the best I ever had, and the fried rice, which is generally never the star of the meal was absolutely delicious! The only slightly disappointing dish was the sweet & sour pork which was reminiscent of food court food. But that wasn't a problem since there was enough food on the table to feed a second family. The service was wonderful as well. I will definitely stop by the next time I am in the area.

We were so excited to see a Korean joint in the neighbourhood... wow weâre we disappointed. The decor was ok, but the atmosphere felt like a fancy take out restaurant (which it might very well be). We ordered the chicken and kimchi dumplings (which sounds amazing), the beef bibimbop and the Korean chilli chicken wings. The dumplings were flavourless and served with a drop of mayonnaise (). The bibimbop was almost cold - certainly not sizzling. The rice had no crisp to it and everything was under seasoned (if seasoned AT ALL). The $15 bibimbop was also served with a âmiso soupâ...it was powdered salt with water and green onion. If you are going to serve miso soup like that, just donât. Lastly, the chicken wings... you would think a Korean restaurant would know how to deep fry chicken... nope. They were nearly raw and the sauce they used was horrible. Again, zero crisp. Overall, weâre choked that we forked out $50 dollars on food that should have been $30. Had it been priced accordingly, I wouldnât be writing this review. Donât waste your money.

My husband & I went for lunch after studying the menu online, and ordered differently after avoiding returning for 6 years! My husband had ginger chicken and I had mixed veg with seafood. We started with crispy delicious spring rolls. All the sauces available were great. My husband loved his chicken, and I quite liked my entree: the squid was tasteless and rubbery, but everything else was well cooked and tasty. We liked it enough this time that we will return again and try different menu items. The prices are very reasonable and the service was good and very fast.

We came here unexpectedly after travelling all the way from Victoria to find the other Japanese restaurant closed (though reported open on Facebook) nearby. Good news! This place was open and clean and we were seated promptly and served our fresh food in sizeable portions at very reasonable prices. Washrooms are wheelchair accessible. Loved the various ceramic bowls used to serve the food, the Asian decor, the cute dining booths, and a few large monitors mounted high for those sport buffs who need to watch while dining. Even more memorable was our send-off: when we got up to leave the restaurant, the servers called out âgoodbyeâ which was then followed by more loud goodbyes from the guys prepping the sushi behind the counter. Sweet. I Recommend!
