I am not a foodie but I do enjoy a good meal and we decided to dine here as we were in town and wanted something different for our anniversary. We understand that food is prepared to order in nice restaurants, we understand that there can be a wait and sometimes that wait can be longer than expected due to a large number of guests. However, this restaurant presented a number of issues that should be noted. 1. We ordered appetizers, salads and entrees. After waiting longer than expected for the appetizer, the salad was delivered before we finished the appetizer and then the entrees were delivered before we were finished with the salads. This really shouldn't be that difficult to plan out and it just gives the feeling of "please hurry up and leave".2. The appetizer we ordered was the bruschetta. The tomatoes were fresh and tasty but the bread arrived not crispy, not over-toasted but it was burnt, as in black around the edges. I don't eat burnt toast at home and I don't expect to be served burnt bread in a restaurant.3. The salad I ordered was the Seasonal Salad which was to include fresh fruit. The fruit consisted of a few cherry tomatoes, what I think were dried cherries but maybe were craisins and some sun-dried tomatoes. So, I suppose the cherry tomatoes were the fresh fruit unless someone knows something about dried food being in season that I don't know.4. My entrée was the fresh catch. The fish was prepared nicely and had good flavor. It was however served luke-warm which I have a feeling was due to the fact that a server tried to present this dish to the table next to us about 10 minutes earlier. They had not ordered this and I did not see anyone else served this entrée before mine arrived.5. I assume that this restaurant does not serve bread as we were not offered any. Not a big deal but it would be nice.6. I also assume this restaurant does not serve wine as we did not see a wine list and we were not asked if we would like any wine. I did see a few bottles hanging on a wall so maybe wine is only used for decoration.7. At the end of the small bar, close to or in plain view of most guests, there is an open garbage can. This can was used for empty bottles which was acceptable but in addition, this can was used for scraping leftovers into as tables were cleared. Definitely not something I want to see or smell while I am dining.8. I was told by fellow diners that after I departed, the manager/owner? berated one of the servers in front of the guests and other staff. In what business is that appropriate? Answer: Absolutely none. We had high hopes for this being a cut above other restaurants in the area. While it was definitely different, it was not different in a good way. There will be no return visit.

We serve up hearty portions of premium meats sliced in-house, hand-shredded cheeses and imported ingredients, scratch made sauces & dressings and fresh fruit & vegetables chopped in-house every day. All served with a generous dose of hospitality. Our Kitc
When visiting family in Starkville we ALWAYS make sure we eat at Newk's, at least once if not more. The food is always on point, high quality, and well prepared. They offer a wide variety of salads, sandwiches, soups, and flatbread pizza. I had the chicken pesto sandwich which was outstanding. The bread was baked fresh, the chicken tender, and the pesto very tasty. My wife had the flatbread pizza which was loaded with ingredients. The spicy chicken pizza does have a kick to it, just an FYI. I sampled it and will order it on our next visit. There were leftovers so we enjoyed it again the following day. There is a large dining area with tables and booths. The drinks are self serve, servers deliver to your table, and there is a nice, I guess you would call it a condiment bar, consisting of breadsticks, croutons, pepper slices, and other items to add to your meal. Nice touch. They offer delicious looking cakes. I have not tried them so no opinion. We have been very happy with every visit and will return on our next visit.

Tonight was a pretty busy night in Starkville because of the Texas A&M game happening tomorrow, and even though the place was pretty full, they made our food in an extremely timely manner. Additionally, our waitress Amanda made us feel really special. She had been our waitress before and she remembered us, really emphasizing that small town, family feel. Additionally, she checked up on us frequently, always providing friendly banter when she stopped by. If I could give this place another star, I would!

Came in for a late breakfast on a weekday after MSU Orientation so didn't experience the wait times other reviews mention. Our server, Renee came to the table as soon as we were seated, took our orders, brought great coffee and food came out very quickly. The omelettes had eggs as fluffy and delicious as we've ever tasted. We ordered the pulled pork and western omelettes, loaded hash browns, chocolate chip pancakes and the old favorite "two over easy" with grits - everything was very, very good. Most impressive of all Renee came to the table to talk to us and she could tell that we were from out of town with a soon to be freshman. She told our granddaughter that when she comes back to school, if she ever gets lonely to come back to the restaurant, everyone needs a friend and they are all family. We were so touched- what a lovely thing to say and do for a young girl soon to be on her own for the first time. Thank you Renee and thank you to the Starkville Cafe for hiring such caring lovely people.

Local American style restaurant with an extensive menu variety, beautiful ambiance, great happy hour, private dining options, and amazing service.
Arrived a little past 3:00 p.m. after a MSU home basketball game. Restaurant was virtually empty so seating was relatively prompt. Each member of our party of four ordered the same entree - the 12 ounce Carribean ribeye with loaded baked potatoes as the side. Within moments of taking our order our server returned to advise that the kitchen had notified her that they would not have baked potatoes for another hour. Reluctantly we settled for substitutions of salads and fried potatoes. When our steaks were served, two of the four were noticeably undercooked and one was a really poor cut of meat with far more gristle and fat than edible meat. When summoned, the manager returned all 3 steaks to the kitchen - one to be replaced and the other two to be returned to the grill for further cooking. In about 15 minutes, the replacement steaks were returned and we completed our meals. Despite being somewhat better than before, I still found my steak to be of inferior quality - about 25% inedible fat. An hour into our experience, we requested our checks! Both the manager and waitress apologized for our experience but did little to alleviate our frustration or dissatisfaction. This was without question the worst $50 plus meal I have ever had. I will not return!!

This is my second review of The Veranda on TripAdvisor, and I regret to say that I cannot give it another glowing review. We have eaten here often for years and the food and service have always been outstanding. But today, it was poor. Not even average. We arrived at 12:15 and were seated in the bar - it was crowded, but not as crowded as I've seen it at that time of day. The waitress was average at best, not typical at all. She brought water, but no straws, and when we asked, it took a long time to get them. Once our appetizer came out, we didn't see her again for a very long time - and our food didn't arrive until nearly 1:30. Really unacceptable. My husband's waffle was flat and tasteless, my order was wrong. I had ordered a blue plate with quiche, cheese grits, bacon and a cinnamon roll. Instead of quiche, I was given 2 chicken strips, covered in some kind of sauce (and the chicken was very dry, like it had been sitting out awhile). The bacon was limp and greasy and cold. The cheese grits and the cinnamon roll were both cold and tasted like they had been sitting out - edges were hard, etc. When I mentioned I ordered quiche, she just said "oh" and I said "never mind - I'll eat the chicken" because we had been waiting so long and my husband was planning to go to the 2:00 baseball game. She finally brought out a piece of quiche, and when I tasted it, it was also cold. After this, we never saw her again - another waitress brought our bill. We have NEVER had this kind of experience at The Veranda and are really disappointed. My husband has seen other negative reviews recently and we were hoping they were not true and that they are not letting the food and service go. We were really, really disappointed because it's one of our favorite places to eat in Starkville. But I'm afraid it will be a long time before we go back - Restaurant Tyler, Bulldog Burger, The Little Dooey and other places that have good food and service will get our business in the future.

Restaurant uses regional ingredients to produce consistently great meals.
My wife and I attended a retirement party for a former colleague. The seasonal salad was already on the table when we arrived. A server came around with small amounts of two different salad dressings, and we each got the same dressing. Unfortunately, I felt like I didn't have enough of the dressing to put on my whole salad. The entree that we got was shrimp and grits, and I asked if they could make ours without the bacon wrapped around the shrimp. The waiter said they could do that so that's the way we had ours. The dish was very tasty, and the shrimp were relatively large. Several desserts were put on the bar, and my wife and I got two different ones: cheesecake and pecan pie. We split them and thought they were delicious. Except for the salad, what we had to eat was pretty spectacular. I found the chair to be very uncomfortable, and it took a long time to get our food. I would certainly be willing to go back at some future date.

I appreciate the consistency of Mugshots burgers and staff across locations. The burgers are always large and well prepared and the servers are pleasant and attentive. Location just across from the Courtyard Starkville is a huge plus if youâre staying at that hotel.

We serve big, juicy, handmade burgers with thought-out ingredients served on a fresh-baked, never-smushed bun.
This is one of the best places in Starkville for a good beer selection. They rotate local and regional selections, and host tap takeover nights about once a month during the spring/fall. Iâve gotten to know the manager and owners, and theyâre great people. Ask if Ianâs in, and tell them Gerry sent you!
