From humble beginnings as an outdoor-only cafe in the small town of Buena Vista, Virginia, Brian and Nina have always been at the heart of this special restaurant. Through blood, sweat, tears - and the sacrifice of having no social life - Brian and Nina h
Stopped in here for lunch on our travels down I-81. Inside, we were greeted and told to have a seat anywhere we liked. We chose a booth with a view of the Mountains and I-81 down below. Our waitress was around rather quickly to take our drink orders. We ordered a kids mac & cheese meal, a medium-well burger with bacon and american cheese & a well-done burger with cheddar and chili. For our sides we chose sweet potato fries and the kids waffle fries. While we waited our drinks were delivered to the tables. One of our glasses of water with lemon also came with a fruit fly. So, that was not a good first impression. It took a good 5 minutes or so to flag down our waitress for a new water. It probably took about 15-20 minutes for our orders to come out of the kitchen. Once they did everything looked good. However, my burger was served up with cooked carrots instead of sweet potato fries. Our waitress did catch the error as she was placing the order down and said to just keep the carrots and she would bring out the fries. The food: Was EXCELLENT. Burgers (7 oz) were juicy. Although both were cooked well done instead of ONE of them being medium-well. Burgers had good taste. Chili on top was good and plentiful. Sweet potato fries were yummy. Dipping sauce for sweet potato fries was SPICY and not to our liking. A good marshmallow cinnamon sauce would be a better match in my opinion. Kids waffle fries were just OK. Kids mac-n-cheese on the other hand was delish. It was a decent size and was super cheesey. Definitely tasted homemade with a hint of parmesan. Carrots were also fresh hand-cut..NOT canned. They were super soft and delicious. Tasted like they were plucked right out of a pot roast dish that had been simmering for hours. Tasted like butter with a hint of salt. YUM.Atmosphere: Hole in the wall. Kind of dark with an overtone of being a bar-pub. Dark floors, dark chairs. Could use some sprucing up. The one-room restrooms were absolutely FILTHY. Looked like they never get mopped. Grime and dirt all over the floors and around the base of the toilets. GROSS. Made me question cleanliness of the kitchen. Dining room could also use a mop, but was NOT as bad as the restrooms.Overall, the view was the highlight. You will get an excellent view of the mountains from the restaurant's window seats. Food was good. Burgers were very good and so were the sweet potato fries. Carrots were delicious. Kids mac-n-cheese tasted homemade and was super cheesey! I would recommend them both. Prices were average. Staff was OK, not overly friendly. Atmosphere was lacking. Cleanliness was a concern. Paved parking is limited. Bottom Line: Excellent views, good food, decent prices, but atmosphere and cleanliness lack.Note: Bar area accessible through doorway in restaurant.

We stopped by chance returning from Blue Ridge Pwky. We both had great sandwiches, mine a meatball sub and my wife's a chicken quasadilla. My side of cold slaw was home made and terrific. Serve was quick and friendly. A real atmospheric old-fashioned grill and a popular spot with locals.Thank you so much for not only your business but for also taking the time to let other travelers know about your experience! That meatball sub is my favorite and we love being a part of the old-fashioned soda fountain and keeping it alive! We appreciate you!

While driving back to Tennessee we got hungry and saw this Star, North Star. A small hometown family restaurant that has awesome tasting food and clean bathrooms. I had the special, Taco Salad and others had double cheeseburgers with bacon. Both meals came with sides and drink. Server was pleasant and kept the drinks full. The meals were served hot and tasted great. The pricing on everything is unbelievable. We will be back cuz we found nothing bad at North Star.
If you're traveling south on I-81 there is no place as easy to access as the Subway in Buchanan. It is literally right off the access ramp, behind the Citgo station. The service at this Subway was quick and the prices were very affordable. The food was as fine as you would expect from a Subway. There is a single unisex bathroom. If we get back on this road, we'll stop again.

As old as the hills . . . The Peaks of Otter have drawn settlers and travelers to the region for more than 8,000 years. The community whose vestiges remain to be explored today had its beginning in 1766 when Thomas Wood arrived from Pennsylvania. The wife
Stopped for a late lunch on our dayâs drive on the parkway. A beautiful setting looking out at the lake and the mountain. The soup/salad entree was satisfying and reasonable. My lunch partner enjoyed the hamburger but it was slow to arrive...said she would have ordered something different if she knew it would take the 15-20 minutes it took.Ruth, thank you very much for your positive feedback about your visit to Peaks of Otter Lodge. We appreciate your comments and will make sure we work hard to improve our service so that your future visits are even more memorable and delightful.
