Reviews on African food in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, South Africa. Oudtshoorn, the "ostrich capital of the world", is a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa, located between the Swartberg mountains to the north and the Outeniqua Mountains to the south. Two ostrich-feather booms, during 1865-1870 and 1900-1914, truly established the settlement. With approximately 60,000 inhabitants, it is the largest town in the Little Karoo region. The town's economy is primarily reliant on the ostrich farming and tourism industries. Oudtshoorn is home to the world's largest ostrich population, with a number of specialized ostrich breeding farms, such as the Safari Show Farm and the Highgate Ostrich Show Farm.

Our lovely café offers light meals for our visitors to enjoy. Many of our visitors want to taste Ostrich and with the a la Carte menu at our Safari café there is an opportunity for you to indulge in one of the ostrich dishes on offer. We also have meal op
You normally order your food from an extensive menu of a variety of ostrich dishes and then go on your tour of the ostrich farm which we did and I wrote an extensive review on the farm which was very interesting. You then come back around 60-90 mins later and eat your food. I have had ostrich before but never so tender and well cooked. It really was a joy, and washed down with a glass of sav blanc!

We stayed at Surval for two nights and one of the nights chose to eat dinner here. It was OK, but certainly not up to standards with the meals we had been enjoying in South Africa prior to this. I had the Babotie which was very good (but also a very simple meal), and the other various dishes that were served around the table were marginal. Coffee is absolutely horrible! The view is lovely, but that's not enough to make us want to return.

Restaurant was recommended to us (we were only spending 1 night in Oudtshoorn), but ended up pretty disappointed:- Hard to find if you use google maps (restaurant is shown in the wrong location). Managers aware of this, but hasnât been corrected- After studying the menu carefully and deciding on our main courses my wifeâs choice was not available and the server didnât tell us this when she gave us the menus- We both ended up having mussels; my wifeâs stomach wasnât good afterwards, and they definitely didnât agree with mine! All in all probably the worst restaurant experience during our almost 3 week trip in SA.

De Oude Meul Old Mill Restaurant is no ordinary restaurant. It is a historic building with the Old Watermill still inside the restaurant. Approx. 150 years old. The restaurant opened its doors in Oct. 2003 and is still going strong! The restaurant is know
We went to the Old Mill Lodge restaurant because we were staying at their lodge and since we didn't feel like driving at night we didn't have many options. However we do not recommend it.The service was terrible. We were put at a table that was barely cleared after the previous customers and not dressed. The waiters were not paying attention and didn't seem to care nor about the customers nor about their work. The food itself was also disappointing. Since we were in the region of the ostrich and there were several of these birds on the property, we wanted to try an ostrich steak at the restaurant. Unfortunately, the meat was clearly undercooked and did not taste good. Luckily, we tried another ostrich steak further on at a real ostrich farm and it was delicious.

Welcome and service 10 out of 10. Food, 7 out of 10. For being the most "Posh" restaurant in Oudtshoorn I personally was disappointed by the snaller things, cutlery, crocery and table cloth. The "ugly duckling" down the road does have more style and "bang for your buck". To charce people R20 p/p for an extra serving of bread and olive oil after an avarage meal for 2 with fair wine of just under R1000.00 per couple before gratuity... Is well .. A little disapointing.

Buffelsdrift Game Lodge's A la Carte Restaurant offers local Karoo cuisine with the perfect atmosphere to enjoy while listening to the hippos playing in the water. The surrounding wooden deck overlooking the 5 hectare natural waterhole makes it the perfec
Went here for dinner, it was recommended by our accommodation host, if weâd realised it was overlooking the watering hole we would have gone before sunset. The service was attentive & professional & the food was beautiful. We had the ostrich steak & lime caught fish of the day, both were cooked to perfection. The malva pudding for desert was lovely!

Great meals in a kind of quirky but very pleasant surrounds. Very busy, so might pay to book, and this was a Tuesday evening.I had a lentil vegetable curry which was nice and spicy and very flavoursome. Husband had the chicken schnitzel tower which he said was good, though not amazing. Service attentive and very friendly.Prices very reasonable, including wine.Payment at the end was organised chaos, but all part of the atmosphere.Would recommend, and definitely suggest booking.
Join us at our local Restaurant coffee shop, served local cuisine, the Mintt Street Cafe & Coffee Shop, for an all-day breakfast and light lunch & dinner. Snack on the delicious eggs Benedict with Oak smoked Trout, or treat yourself to a traditional ostri
A group of us stopped off for brunch, and although the place was very quiet, it took ages to be served. Staff were dressed in their own clothes, sitting at a table, so were difficult to know who were staff. Food wasn't great, the scrambled eggs were a huge portion, and were topped with a bright yellow sauce
