Ron's Place in Zipolite (Oaxaca, Mexico) is a unpretentious watering hole where friends and future friends gather to talk, drink, and revel in the fact that, despite it all, life truly is good. Especially when you have a drink in front of you and good tunes playing in the background.

We stayed in Zipolite in late January early February, which coincided with the 3-day 2020 Nude Festival. The beach is wide and a bit over a mile long. There are all manner of accommodations from a place to pitch a tent on the beach to a $200/night hotel. Most of the hotels are pretty basic without AC, but they are right on the beach so many don't appear to need AC (I'm not one of them.) We sat at a hotel's beach chair all day, ate their food and was allowed to swim in their pool -- our tab most days was about $20-$25 including coffee, breakfast, lunch and beer. The vibe at the beach is completely chill and truly clothing optional. My wife felt completely comfortable walking the entire beach alone wearing nothing but sunglasses. The nude festival drew a lot more people to the beach for the weekend (many of whom stayed clothed oddly enough), but only a few dozen participated in the yoga, body painting, volleyball and the like. A pleasant surprise was the options and quality of the food. Even though it is fairly remote (one hour from HUX), there was a broad variety of all kinds of cuisine. I had some of the best steak and octopus I've ever had anywhere in Zipolite for $8-$12. Amazing values. We're definitely going back. It is a bit surprising it hasn't been overrun and ruined like so many other Mexican coastal towns. I think the CO element and the dangerous waves will discourage families and other casual beach goers from attending.

Great little enclave at the eastern end of Playa Zipolite; it's a bit unclear at first, but you access it by climbing a flight of stairs that leads to a little bar with a lookout on top of a little crest, and then going down a flight of stairs from there to the actual Playa Del Amor. This is the (unofficial) gay portion of the Zipolite beach, and it is also very nude. It's a perfect spot to watch the sunset and splash around in the waves; it's also a great spot to meet fellow gay travellers. The water can be pretty strong and there are sharp rocks on one side, but if you don't go too deep it is relatively safe, and very refreshing. There are two little stands selling beers and cocktails at the base of the cliff; they walk around the entire beach to take orders, bring you drinks, collect bottles and even distribute little candle lanterns once it gets dark - probably the best servers in all of Zipolite. It's a 20 to 30 minute walk on the beach from the west end of Zipolite to Playa Del Amor, but it's usually worth the sweat.
