Zhengding, originally Zhending (Chinese: 真定) and formerly romanized as Chengting, is a county of southwestern Hebei Province, China, located approximately 260 km (160 mi) south of Beijing. It comes under the administration and is located just to the north of the urban core of Shijiazhuang and has a population of 594,000. Zhengding has been an important religious center for more than 1,000 years, from - at least - the times of the Sui dynasty to the Qing dynasty. It is the founding place of several major schools of Chan Buddhism, however, many former religious building complexes have been severely damaged throughout history. A noted temple is the Longxing Monastery, where the historical building ensemble has been preserved almost intact. Furthermore, four famous pagodas, each with its own architectural style, are still standing.

Located in the Longxing Temple, Moni Palace is the world's only structure with its “Song Dynasty architecture". Other than its architecture, the frescos and the colorful wooden carving of Guanyin sitting in a grotto inside the hall are also of high value. It is ranked as "the most beautiful Guanyin Buddha" in China. A marvelous and valuable historical and cultural relic.

Kaiyuan Temple is really interesting. Not only does it have the only remaining Tang Dynasty bell tower in China, but it also has one of the largest Bixi (turtle base for a stela) ever found in China, and part of the massive stela next to it. The size and weight of these is just incredible. There's also the unusual San Men pavilion, which looks very unlike other Chinese buildings. As with all the temples in Zhengding (except Longxing aka Big Buddha Temple) it stays open until 11pm and is brightly lit up, making it ideal for night photography. Entry is 10RMB. Right next to the temple you can see part of the archaeological excavation of Zhengding left uncovered with signs explaining the different features (in Chinese only unfortunately). It’s very easy to get to, being only a 20-minute cab ride from the centre of Shijiazhuang, or take bus 177 from the medical university bus stop (河北医大) north of the stadium on Zhongshan Road to Zhengding Nanmen (正定南门; if using a transport card you’ll be asked to pay twice when leaving the previous payment zone). Then walk into the walled town and see the map with specific directions to this temple and the others in Zhengding.

This temple is somewhat confusingly called Big Buddha Temple (大佛寺) by locals (and on some maps and the bus stop), but in fact its official name is Longxing Temple (隆兴寺). A beautiful and very large temple, set in lovely grounds, you should allow at least an hour for your visit. The huge copper Guanyin after which the temple is named is extremely impressive. Unlike the other temples in Zhengding which are lit up and stay open until 11pm, this one closes at 5.30. It’s very easy to get to, being only a 20-minute cab ride from the centre, or take bus 177 from the medical university bus stop (河北医大) north of the stadium on Zhongshan Road to Zhengding Nanmen (正定南门; if using a transport card you’ll be asked to pay a second time when leaving the previous payment zone). Then walk into the walled town to see a map with specific directions to the temple (and all the others in Zhengding).
