What to do and see in Zentrum, Saxony: The Best Bars & Clubs

September 17, 2021 Christa Meece

It’s always hard to fill the shoes of someone who used to do your job very well. If you’re the choirmaster at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, guess whose shoes you have to fill? Bach’s. (No pressure.) Leipzig is closely connected to classical music—Wagner was born here, and Mendelssohn established a conservatory here in 1843. If you’re more of a melancholy, contemporary type, visit during the Wave-Gotik-Treffen, billed as the world’s largest "dark" (Goth, industrial, punk, etc.) music festival.

Auerbach's Keller

This famous restaurant, established in the 16th century, was immortalized in Goethe's "Faust."

Auerbachs Keller (Auerbach's Cellar) is a famous restaurant located in the lower level of Mädlerpassage at Marktplatz. In Goethe’s play Faust, Dr. Faust met Mephistopheles in this restaurant, and this play propelled the restaurant to worldwide fame. When we visited Leipzig multiple times in the past, we used to spend most of our time visiting music related sites and having excursions to Dresden and Weimar. Only when we had spare time we used to go to Mädlerpassage to look at the sculptures of “Faust with Mephistopheles” & “Student Bewitched by Devil”. We also peaked into Auerbachs Keller without actually going inside. But this time, we decided to have dinner at this restaurant. When we entered the restaurant, we were surprised at the huge size of the dining area. We were also intrigued by its decors, including wall paintings with devils & a devil figure sitting atop a beer/wine barrel at the corner. The food servers were efficient, and the diverse menu items were reasonably priced. We ordered Meatloaf and Viennse Schnitzel dishes with drinks. The tasty dishes came to us quickly, and the portions were very generous. When we came into the restaurant at 6.30 pm, we saw some empty tables. But soon, the empty tables were filled with groups of diners who appeared to be conference attendees and group tourists. The restaurant’s atmosphere was lively and vibrant. We had a pleasant and enjoyable dining experience at this restaurant. Auerbachs Keller is highly recommended.
