What to do and see in Zealand, Zealand: The Best Bus Tours

December 11, 2021 Marlin Saiz

Denmark's largest island is so much more than simply the home of the country's dynamic capital, Copenhagen. Zealand also offers a delightful array of holiday homes and villas, pleasing harbors and sandy beaches, fringed by forests where castles lurk. Major destinations include the UNESCO-designated, Dutch Renaissance-style Kronborg Castle in Helsingor and the Viking attractions, cathedral and music festival of Roskilde. To the south bobs a flotilla of beautiful and relatively untouched islands.

It was great to be able to go around freely and at our own pace. Malmo has a great infrastructure for biking in place, and it is really easy to go around. For the small one (6 yrs) we choose to get a cargostyle bike, which worked out really well.

Having said that we booked the "Group Option", there was only myself and my wife on the bus, so we had our guide Svend all to ourselves. Collection was from our hotel in a smart 16 seater minibus and we set off to Roskilde for visits to the Cathedral (where all the Kings & Queens are buried) and then to the Viking Ship museum. We particularly enjoyed the ship museum and if you are planning a private tour would suggest you make sure enough time is spent here. Then it is off to Hillerod and after lunch in the town a walk around Fredriksborg Castle. - If you want to see all the castle and walk round the gardens you need to get a move on. Your guide will almost certainly recommend you include the Castle Chapel on your tour. Back on the bus and off to the final stop at Kronborg Castle in Helsingborg. An interesting tour round the inside with a mock performance of part of Hamlet, followed by a walk onto the ramparts with views of Sweden. It's a lot to fit into a single day and your guide does have to keep you moving, so you don't always get as long as you want at each location.
