What to do and see in Zakopane, Southern Poland: The Best Walking Tours

September 6, 2021 Mollie Coke

Just a few miles from the Slovak border in south central Poland, Zakopane is a resort town in the Tatra Mountains, popular with skiers in winter and with hikers and climbers year-round. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Zakopane grew into Poland’s most visible art colony, a hotbed of culture ended by Soviet influence after World War II. Today it harkens back to an earlier time, complete with gorgeous wooden houses. Learn about these buildings and more at the Museum of Zakopane Style.

We were picked up on time by Wojciech. He was a fantastic guide. From start to finish we were looked after perfectly. It is quite a long drive but absolutely worth it. The scenery is outstanding. We enjoyed seeing traditional wooden houses and 15th century Church of St Michael the Archangel. Rafting in Dunajec was pleasant. The rafts hold 12 people and it was quite busy. I recommend if you visit Krakow allow yourself 6 days as there is so much to see and do.

We were looking forward to our guided tour and were not disappointed. It was wonderful to get so close to history. Every point of our tour meaningful, well explained and many of our questions were answered. Our tour guide’s English was excellent. We really appreciated professionalism and time management. Everything (excluding street parking, which is clearly out of anyone’s control) was very well planned.

From the first communications by email, I knew we’d found a great company to make our holiday to Zakopane special. Mine and my sister’s kids (aged 5-10) had three days of 2 hour ski lessons with Daniel, Magda and Marta who were fantastic with them. By the end of day 3 they could all snow plough turn confidently and use the lift on their own. More important, they loved it! Retha was very attentive, coming over to check how they were doing. She also arranged a fab Kulig trip for us all. Thanks Retha and team!
