I was amazed at how they encapsulated this old wooden house where Tsar Peter the Great of Russia once stayed to learn shipbuilding techniques to take back to Russia. The museum guide was of Russian decent and was able to provide an endless amount of historical background. What a rich experience.

Kooijman Souvenirs & Clogs Wooden Shoe Workshop

Wooden Shoe Workshop 'de Zaanse Schans' offers a museum and wooden shoe making demonstration, free admission. Open year round.

This is an absolutely fabulous and very informative museum depicting the history of Clog making, with a collection of antique klompen from around the Netherlands and also the world (look for the Japanese lacquered klompen) I particularly liked the horse klompen. Seriously! Who knew horses wore klompen? After looking at the many different styles of klompen, we were treated to a fascinating demonstration lasting about five minutes showing the modern way of making a klompen from the wooden poplar log to a full shaped klomp. The wood is still wet and once the klomp had been formed, the demonstrator blew into it and water actually ran out. Before modern techniques were implemented, the making of a klomp could take take 4+hours. Following on from the demonstration was the shop, full of klompen. Had I not already visited a gift shop only a couple of hours earlier, I probably would have spent quite a lot on money on klompen and klompen-related gifts.

The shopping area in Zaandam offers everything for a day of great shopping. Since a few years the city centre has transformed into an interesting architectural area. The traditional houses are mixed up with modern day aspects. When arriving by train, the first thing you see is the world famous Inntel Hotel. Next to it is the city's town hall. From here you walk straight into the shopping area!
