What to do and see in Yucatan Peninsula, Yucatan Peninsula: The Best Art Museums

December 1, 2021 Kaleigh Reichenbach

Hidden gems of Yucatan, such as Tulum, Akumal, Chetumal, Chichen Itza and Merida, offer an authentic taste of Mexico. Akumal and more Caribbean-style Chetumal, near the Belize border, deliver delectable white-sand beaches and great snorkelling. Merida, Chichen Itza and Tulum, with their ancient ruins, offer a passage into the Yucatanâs native history. Nature lovers can jungle trek and swim in subterranean sinkholes filled with crystal-clear water. Bike around the ruins and hop between towns in colectivo vans.

Instead of group tours, they are conducting private tours with your own group of cohorts. What a fascinating and fabulous place to visit and to make a donation to a very worthy cause. The owners have opened their private home and private collection of Mexican art to anybody who wants to visit and only ask for a modest donation that goes towards local charities. It is impossible to absorb everything and only one visit as there is so much of interest to look at. A big shout out to the owners for their vision and generosity.

Mono Rojo Museo/taller

Local museun/gallery has been designed and built over the last 6 years by artist Guillermo Mazzoco. The museum has is own works of art, mostly sculpture, the works of his collective and a very special collection of Mayan artifacts. Mayan culture and history are infused throughout and the Becan ruins are located 500 meters away. This is a unique and authentic experience not to be missed.

A hidden treasure that is more than just a museum. I’ve been to Mono Rojo (Becan, Campeche) three times now, and every time I leave, I immediately want to return. Its location right off busy Highway 186 belies a rustic, tranquil interior filled with art, interesting Mayan artifacts, dogs, and good vibes. Best of all, the spectacular ruins are just a short walk away! Mono Rojo continually evolves at the loving hands of its artist-owner, Memo Mazzoco, and his partner Monica Kumar. It’s easy to find and only about 90 minutes west of Bacalar. Do yourself a favor, get off the beaten tourist path and spend a day at Mono Rojo - you won’t regret it!

Merida is filled with excellent museums - and other sights - but this was one of my favourites. Free entry, beautiful old building with an ethereal inner courtyard, small giftshop (to really make those memories last!!), and more. But obviously the real attraction is the art. There were 4 different exhibits on when I was there, but nothing better than the works of: Mario Martín del Campo. This man is a genius! Hopefully the art on offer wows you like it did me. If not, enjoy the cool, the shade, and the history built into the setting itself.

Art Gallery in La Quinta Avenida, Playa del Carmen for 11 years and over 20 years in the Mayan Riviera. Born from the need of giving tourist access to the city’s incredible art and cultural life. Started as Gastón Charó’s studio to then evolve into a place where to expose art and all it’s different ramifications: from sculptures to paintings, photographs, jewellery and much more. Gastón Charó Gallery is the perfect expression of the concept of art being a universal language that goes beyond every country’s borders to unify people in the expression of the self through art. Exposing mainly Gastón Charó’s work which depicts an exotic combination of cubism, surrealism and expressionism. The art gallery also exhibits several national and international local artist offering a wide variety of styles and techniques in order to satisfy every person’s need.

We love bringing back on our trips to Mexico art for our home. We were lucky to come across Gastón’s gallery. While he displays art from various artists, his work is truly amazing. We had our piece shipped back and it arrived perfectly so don’t worry about it, and be sure to take home a true piece of art.
