Youghal (/ˈjɔːl/ YAWL; Irish: Eochaill, meaning "yew wood") is a seaside resort town in County Cork, Ireland. Sitting on the estuary of the River Blackwater, in the past it was militarily and economically important. Being built on the edge of a steep riverbank, the town has a distinctive long and narrow layout. As of the 2016 census the population was 7,963.

Since its foundation in 1220, St. Mary's Collegiate Church has been at the heart of the town of Youghal. For over 800 years, the stone walls and wooden roof have provided sanctuary and solace through times of war and famine, as well as a calm presence in times of prosperity and peace. There is so much to discover her and as you look around you will see where parts of the church have been altered over the centuries. Despite these changes, the craftsmen who constructed the building in the 13th century would recognise it today. Christian worship continues to this day and Church of Ireland services are regularly held here. The church came into the care of Cork County Council in 2005 and now hosts a wide range of community events and performances, as well as welcoming visitors from all over the world!

Really loved our tour of the St Mary Collegiate Church -- our tour guide, Wayne, was very friendly, welcoming and filled with interesting information about the Church and the surrounding areas. Would highly recommend this to anyone interested in Irish history, wanting to spend time in a unique and impressive historical building, and/or wanting to learn some interesting facts about an Irish town that played a big role in history!

Youghal is a very historic walled port town with numerous interesting sites to see. It is also a modern vibrant town with blue flag beaches. In the heart of it all is Moby Dick’s Pub with its unique water front setting. Little wonder then that John Huston and Gregory Peck based themselves in Moby Dick’s Pub for the duration of the film.

Lovely walk by the seaside. You can walk from the centre of Youghal to the strand near Red Barn. The walk fro the town to the strand is probably 3 miles long on good quality paths. If you want to walk to Red Barn you will have to walk about a half mile on the beach. Well worth while doing it.

Youghal, Co. Cork is a unique place in Ireland’s Ancient East with miles of sandy beach and a rich medieval history. Youghal Clock Gate Tower is the most visible landmark in the centre of Youghal’s Main Street and is newly opened for 2017 as a visitor attraction. Although built in 1777 as a gaol, this story spans 700 years of history. Visit is by way of a guided tour (allow 1 hour) with costumed ‘storytellers’ over 4 floors. Each floor depicts a different era in time and includes a medieval merchant’s dwelling, an 18th Century Gaol, a ‘time keeping floor’ and a former family home. Hear stories of pain, tragedy and rebellion, but also stories of love, friendship and generosity throughout this tour.

Shirley our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and a wonderful guide. She has a deep love for and understanding of history which only adds to the tour quality. The Tower is very well laid out with each floor depicting an era of its life. The top floor with the family history and video from John McGrath who lived in the Tower is fascinating. Well worth your time and money to visit this amazing place. Would highly recommend to anyone is this area.
