The Kuroshima Visitor Center is built on the site of the old guard house (bansho), a designated cultural property of Taketomi Town. It exhibits traditional agricultural tools and everyday items, as well as folk art, handicrafts, and marine life, so that visitors can understand the history and culture of Kuroshima Island. One of the island elders is usually on hand to teach visitors how to use dried straw to make delicately crafted birds, insects, and sea creatures - a traditional form of Okinawa craftwork.
