The livable, lovable city of Xiamen teems with university students buzzing amid Buddhist temples, art galleries and beautiful parks. The city is actually comprised of islands; one of which, Gulangyu, is a peaceful bohemian oasis that's completely vehicle-free. Nibble on some glass noodles or juicy dumplings while perusing shops stuffed with antiques, delicate beads or ceramics.

As part of a Viking Ocean excursion, we visited Gulangyu Island and enjoyed the scenery, Shuzhuang garden, and the piano museum. There is a cultural tradition on the island which also features mansions and impressive European style buildingd and bridges. I have numerous photos of our experience on the island.

With the convenience of bike sharing, this area has great views from the seat of a bicycle. The gentle breeze makes a very comfortable stretch of road an amazing bike ride. Views of land meeting ocean and clear blue skies, this is a great way to enjoy the day!

This is a beautiful seaside garden. Shuzhuang Garden (Chinese: 菽庄花园) was built in 1913 in the south of Gulangyu Island. Originally a private villa of the prestigious local squire Lin Erjia, Shuzhuang Garden was donated to the country in 1955. The garden was built according to the natural landform in ingenious layout, which creates a charming view of "garden on the sea and the sea in the garden". In tbe garden you can see a rock garden with the 12 Chinese horoscope and Chinesr poem engraved on tbe rock. From the guide introduction, i came to know that the owner built this garden exactly to the one that he has in his hometown. He must have missed his home. This is really a tranquail place. You can sit on the bench and admire the fishes and surrounding.

It is big and beautiful garden where citizens come to relax and picnic. There are also many turists walking to see attractions and climb hills for the city view. Worth to visit in sunny day so your photos will show spectacular panorama of Xiamen city and the district.

Unfortunately when we visited there, it was partially under renovation, so some house have been closed for visitors. Also the access to the botanical garden was closed I’m not sure if this is because of COVID-19. A few years back when I visited the temple the first time the gate was open. I like this temple because it’s not over crowded and also the decoration is a mix between the traditional Chinese decor and a modern touch. I find it calming to go there, but in these days there is a lot of entrances procedure with health code and showing the passport.

This is the first time I've visited a museum that houses pianos! The Piano Museum is an attraction located on Gulangyu island. The pianos in the museum all belong to a solo collector,Hu Youyi, who loved pianos so much that he collected them from all over the world. There are two quaint little pianos that were built just for kids under 10 years old! The star piece of the museum is a gorgeous harpsichord that he purchased from Australia. There are about 100 over pianos on display in two buildings. It's worth the visit to see the effort, passion and finances of one man's collection, even though you may not be interested in pianos!

Besides Gulangyu Island, this is another popular attraction, hence expect tour groups and the crowd. When I visited on Saturday morning around 10 am, the entrance display panel showed as of that day, 876 had visited this place and 378 visitors were inside then. The highest recorded in a single day is 26,100. Such is the advantage of visiting during low peak season. The main attraction is the 280 mm Krupp Cannon, which is well preserved. Near the main artillery is a huge panel depicting the history of this fort. On top of the fortress, there is a viewing platform of the surrounding Xiamen and coast. There is also a square on the further side of the compound, with 2 demonstrations at 10am and 4pm daily. There are English signs and explanations throughout the compound. I spent an hour leisurely exploring this place, with some time waiting for the tour groups to leave for better photo shoots. Overall, recommended to visit this place. For transportation, I took bus no. 29 along Lujiang Road, in front of Xiamen Ferry Terminal. Bus fare within Xiamen is flat rate 1 rmb, journey about 20 mins.
