Beartooth Highway

Nestled between two scenic wilderness areas, this drive is considered the "most beautiful road in America."

“ The above is a quote from our Swiss friend. Peaks rising over 12,000 ft including the state’s tallest. The Beartooth Plateau is one of the largest landmasses in the United States above 10,000 feet. Hope you find the mountain that looks like a Bear Tooth, I can’t. There are many pointed peaks. Add a mountain goat and pica to this. Lakes, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, and an extreme skier may ski into July. This is Heaven for botanists, wetland ecologists, hydrologists, and soil scientists due to the Mountain fens (peat-accumulating wetlands) or groundwater-dependent habitats. Read the other Advisor notes before you go. They mention the weather. That can change any day.

This drive is simply amazing. Right off the bat we saw a large herd of antelope. The views are spectacular and we saw so many beautiful plants and wildlife. We stopped and stuck our feet in Dead Infian Creek and enjoyed various stops along the way.

42-mile Scenic Loop Drive

If you have limited time in the park this is the best route to take. Whether you start at Moose Entrance, Moran Entrance or Jackson Lake Junction you will follow the Teton Park Road with close views of the lakes and Teton Mountains and Highway 89 through the open plains along the Snake River. Take as much time as possible to stop for photo shoots of Jackson and Jenny Lakes and it is worth taking the turn-off to Schwabacher Landing just off Highway 89. Dornans at the southern end of the park is good for food and gifts as is Jackson Lake Lodge.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to describe the majesty of this waterfall and canyon colors, so we will not even try,

Lamar Valley

This route is an amazing drive into the park, with large herds of buffalo grazing in vast fields on both sides of the northeast entrance road. It seemed that our visit coincided with birthing season, when lots of calves were just joining families. They're an unusual orange-brown color, compared with the very dark fur of their parents.' Tourists parked all over the sides of the highway to stop for close-up photos these incredible animals. When I say close-up, I mean with a good zoom. Park signage warns you not to get nearer than 75 yards because the animals are very fast and, if they feel like their babies are threatened, they will charge. We were very fortunate to also spot a small herd of pronghorn elk grazing not far from the road and got some great pix. The drive itself is beautiful, with mountains off in the distance, and a river winding through vast green along and around the roadway.

Old Trail Town

OPEN May 15 through SEPTEMBER 30, 7 days a week Take a walk through history. 27 historic frontier buildings have been reconstructed on the original townsite of Cody, many furnished with period artifacts. Old Trail Town is also home to the Museum of the Old West.

Reviewed By travelingCAgal - San Diego, United States

Lots of western history here. I like that the buildings are authentic and were relocated here for historic preservation. I loved seeing the cabin that Butch Cassidy the Sundance Kid and the Hole in the Wall gang hid out in, Curly's cabin (General Custer's Indian scout), as well as the burial place of Jeremiah Johnston. (Yes, his real name was Johnston, not Johnson, like the movie with Robert Redford). Lots of authentic western and Indian artifacts. I love ghost towns and the old west so this looked exactly like a western town would have back in the day and I like that it is located at the very spot where Buffalo Bill Cody first built "Cody City". I enjoyed our visit very much. Took about 1 1/2 hours to walk though everything.

Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site

The Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site has an incredibly rich history. Run as a federal (territorial) and state prison from 1872 to 1903, it then became the Agricultural Experiment Station for the University of Wyoming after the State Prison relocated to Rawlins. The site is now operated as a Historic Site by the State of Wyoming.

We were on our driving vacation out west and saw the sign, thought we would stop. Am I glad we did!! What a wonderful museum and historical site to visit. We did the self guided tour, so we were free to roam at our own pace, and it was fascinating. Everything is well maintained, the staff was super friendly. And the gift shop was very nice, not just your usual stuff, but some truly interesting items. If you are in the area, don't miss this gem.

Jackson Hole Rodeo

Reviewed By phila374 - Wallsend, United Kingdom

This was our second visit to Jackson Hole Rodeo and it was just as good as the memory of our first visit. We had pre-booked our tickets as we had last time, but this isn’t essential. The atmosphere at the venue is very family friendly, as is the whole experience. The main seating area is opposite the stalls used by the riders and the animals (bulls & horses) giving a great view of the action as they’re released into the arena. The event also includes barrel racing by some very talented female riders, calf lassoing, and the high-light of the evening for the kids of chasing either sheep or calves to retrieve a bandanna. The evening lasts about 2 and a half hours of fun and entertainment. The event has loads of space for parking should you be driving there, alternatively if you’re staying in Jackson Hole it’s only a 10 minutes stroll from the town square. Should their calendar match with our next visit to Jackson Hole, we would definitely be attending again.
