What to do and see in Wynyard, New South Wales: The Best Things to do

March 26, 2022 Jana Sager

Sydney offers plenty of historical and contemporary Australian flavor. The marvelous Sydney Opera House looks like a great origami sailboat, floating peacefully in a harbor. Wander the narrow cobblestone streets of The Rocks and then take in a street performance on the Circular Quay before heading into the Museum of Contemporary Art. The views from the Sydney Tower Eye observatory are epic – use this chance to get to know the layout of the city from high above.

This is such a lovely gallery/shop to visit. I wanted to buy an authentic, beautifully crafted didgeridoo for my brother's wedding present, and I certainly wasn't disappointed. The manager told me all about the didgeridoos, and gave me a fantastic demonstration on what they sounded like. I shipped a very fancy didgeridoo (serpent carved into a knot in the wood) back to the UK, and my brother was so happy with it. Thank you! It makes such a difference to know about the artist and see genuine talent. I will be back!

my partner and i are planning a visit to Latin America at the end of the year (this was before covid) so we thought we would start taking spanish lessons now so we have almost a full year to get good enough to get by during our trip. having a small class of 6 people really helps to reduce the distractions and increase the teacher to student focus. the location in the city is really convenient for us to get to after work and we love that each class is 2 hours because you really need that long to switch off from work mode, tune into the class, go through last week's homework and learn a new topic. it's great being able to learn from a spanish-speaking native teacher. we had Laura Juez Caballero and she was great, very patient with us and really keen to help us learn and get a good grasp of the topics. we were 7 weeks into our 10 week course and due to covid had to pivot to online classes. it's not as effective learning over the web (trying to ask questions with 6 people on zoom is not as fluid but that's due to tech limitations rather than any deficiencies of the school. we appreciate how much of a disruption covid has been to all businesses and it was great the school could continue the classes online. we still got through the remaining 3 weeks 'as usual'. i think the only suggestion i would make is to involve a lot more speaking exercises and homework so we can practice our pronunciations (maybe record ourselves saying sentences or answers to questions or reading out paragraphs at home and sending it to the teachers for feedback?) - that might become more of a focus in the next levels, we don't know, we only just finished our first 10 week, level 1 course. it's been an overload of information as it is so it's not like we were left wanting in any way. it was a lot to learn (as it is with all new languages) but fun to do it anyway and we feel great having done it, like we've accomplished something! we're signing up for the next level now and think it's a fantastic way to spend some of our iso time. definitely recommend Spanish Blackboard Academy to anyone who wants to learn spanish properly (the apps don't work anywhere as well as this!)

Grand Royal Thai Massage

Staying at the Grace hotel (excellent by the way) and after a busy week, felt like a deep tissue massage. Looked on Trip Advisor and found this place had lots of good reviews, so booked a 90 minute grand deep oil massage. Can't believe that in the centre of Sydney, 2 minutes from my hotel, there is this hidden, peaceful gem of a place to get amazing massages. I was well looked after from walking down the stairs to leaving and the massage was as good as many I had while travelling around Thailand. If you are in Sydney and feel like a massage, I suggest you give it a try! I picked up a loyalty card on the way out as this is now my go to massage while on business in Sydney.

Funky Asian ( mainly Chinese decor but heavy emphasis on Japanese drink ingredients) in central Sydney. Dark and mysterious gives you the feeling you’re in old Shanghai. Fantastic vibe. You must try the Bruce Lee cocktail. Like the man himself, it’s a knockout???? Highly recommended ????

Westpac Bank

Reviewed By LisselA - Brisbane, Australia

This beautiful old bank building is listed on the NSW Heritage Regsiter both for its lovely outside but also features that have been retained on the inside. On the ground floor, in a chamber next to but separate from the retail bank, is a heritage gallery featuring original fittings, furniture and decor which also contains historic artefacts and explanatory posters related to the history of the bank. You can learn surprisingly fun facts about the history of banking in Australia and the Westpac bank in particular – the first transactions, the first women employees, and the old shooting range upstairs! A shooting range? Yep - step inside the heritage tellers cages and see where they stored there firearms before modern security was a thing, and see how the old counters are worn on top from years of passing over money. You can also pop downstairs and see the lovely old rooms where the security deposit safes are (though no photography down there). I don't know if we were lucky or it was just a quiet day, but the whole time we were there no-one else came through. If you're first thought is "banking, how boring" you could not be more wrong.
