Stourhead House and Garden

Stourhead includes a Palladian house and world-famous landscape garden. The garden is perhaps the most beautiful and magical of all the great landscape gardens, Stourhead is an 18th-century view of an Arcadian paradise. On a plateau of high ground Stourhead house was built and became home to generations of the Hoare family.

There is a mansion in the Palladian style, gardens and extensive grounds. Admission is a touch expensive, but the chances are that you are already a National Trust member, but if you are not, it's worth considering especially as it will also save you £4 parking charges. I thought the house was fascinating, but excessively adorned and it gives the impression that quantity was more important than quality when bringing back stuff from the Grand Tour. However there are some gems like a John Piper painting and a Fredrick Leighton portrait. The grounds are magnificent and you are forever coming across temples or follies among the specimen trees and other plants as you walk round the lake. Picnics seem popular and the ice house is the best preserved I can remember seeing. Add in the gardens, shop, café and gallery and there is enough to do here for a whole day. Bear in mind that there is a good deal of walking, much of it up and down steep paths, so it could be a challenge for some and either wait for good weather or bring your waterproofs.

Lockeridge Dene and Piggledene

Reviewed By Malibu_Jenny - Reading, United Kingdom

Lockeridge Dene is an unusual and quiet spot just off the A4. It’s well worth a stop off if you’re passing and have any interest in history or geology. There is road site parking next to the gate, though the site itself wouldn’t be suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. In summer, there are cattle grazing here, but in winter the fenced field is empty and you can follow the former riverbed full of tall grasses and enjoy the magic of the stones against a backdrop of thatched cottages and misty hillside. The sarsen stones are 30 million years old and are the building material used for Stonehenge and Avebury. There’s no admission charge or facilities here (though there are nearby pubs), just beautiful, unspoilt countryside.

Black Dog Halt Railway Station

Reviewed By David528764 - Calne, United Kingdom

We took advantage of a few hours of blue skies and sun between the showers to have a very pleasant invigorating walk from Calne to Black Dog Halt. There were a few puddles on the track but no problem as we wearing walking boots. The countryside views were lovely and we were lucky to see red kites, buzzards and a heron during our very pleasant afternoon walk.

Bradford On Avon Bridge

Reviewed By ellabarnes405

No trip to Bradford-On-Avon is complete without a visit to the bridge; it does not rank at #12 thing to do in Bradford-On-Avon for nothing. As a bridge, it certainly lives up to expectations and has survived over 800 years - in my opinion, a good bridge is one that has not yet collapsed. It has a funky little lockup on one side (though this is no longer in use), and from the bridge, swans can be seen in the waters below. It’s a must see for any visit to Bradford-On-Avon, especially if you want to visit both sides of the town.
