Pocono Bike Rental

Pocono Bike Rental is centrally located in the heart of the Poconos, the historic timber and coal industry town of White Haven, PA. Nestled right between the newly minted D&L Black Diamond Rail Trail (10 miles) and the nationally recognized as a must see while in PA, the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail System (26 miles). Either from a mountain biker’s (36+ miles) or a whitewater rafter’s prospective (Class 3+), it is THE PLACE to be for outdoor adventure enthusiasts! Mountain biking in the world famous Lehigh Gorge is truly like no other biking experience! Imagine yourself; comfortably riding a finely tuned bicycle over a PA State maintained former railroad bed, inside a green canopy of thousands of acres of untouched nature as mother earth intended for you to enjoy! The riding temperature inside the 1000′ walls of the Lehigh Gorge under the canopy of trees is cooler and less exposed to direct sunlight, therefore more fun!

My spouse and I booked in for the yoga and bike experience but due to circumstances beyond control, the original date was not available after booking. Tom, the owner, was quick to communicate and offered extremely flexible options to rebook.
We chose to ride from White Haven to Jim Thorpe on comfort bikes as we were not available on the new yoga dates. Tom was right on time and helpful with directions when I got lost trying to find the trailhead. He provided us with great bikes and everything we needed to enjoy the day.
The ride itself was scenic and easy— very enjoyable.
Tom was waiting for us in Jim Thorpe to shuttle us back to White Haven and we ended the day with an interesting conversation on local issues and plans to improve the tourist experience in this beautiful area.
Thanks for a great day, Tom. Looking forward to biking and to yoga next year!

I like boulder field. It’s a cool geological feature that’s worth the visit. You can hike up to it on a trail or drive up to it within a 50 ft walk.
You can walk on the boulders and read about how they were formed. It’s a must stop for Hickory Run state park.

Eckley Miners' Village

Lengthy tour given by a docent with first hand knowledge of the life of a miner. She is the daughter of a PA coal miner. Would have been nice to see the inside of more houses, but you visit enough to get a flavor of the miners' lives. Learning about the Molly Maguires and their struggle for unions would be an appropriate lecture, but I'm not sure they were even mentioned. I purchased a pamphlet in the gift shop to learn more about the Mollies but it was so one sided and anti-Molly it can't be believed. Visit the Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe for a more realistic lesson on the Mollies. The Village is still worth a visit and the museum in the front building should not be missed. Be prepared to walk over a mile.

There were 7 of us including my in-laws in their 50's. We were early so Alexis brought Charlotte (in pic) over to meet us, she is a 3000 pound 18 year old horse. Alexis answered all our questions and was really polite. They provided appropriate footwear (cowboy boots), helmets, and even bug spray for us. They gave us sufficient instructions and safety was their priority. Then the owner, John, came and placed us on the horses appropriate for our heights and weights, and off we went. John took the lead and Alexis was in the middle. We felt really safe the entire time. There wasn't much to see on the trail but getting to know Alexis and John a bit as well as the horses was enjoyable. We were able to jog with the horses too and that was fun as well. Definitely recommend.

While visiting Jim Thorpe, we happened upon the WinterFest and the train was running and tickets were available! $14 per adult. Typical old fashioned train seating, i suggest sitting on right side, facing away from town as this affords the best views. Nice way to spend an hour and the price was right!

To finish out the summer we decided to go horseback riding. We had a great experience at Daisy Field Farm. The guides Harley and the gentleman (forgot his name, sorry) were AWESOME!!! They are kind, patient and concerned about the riders safety. I truly appreciate the man staying close to my 11 year son. I am planning to come back in the fall and winter for a sleigh ride. I took both of my nieces, separately, for an hour long trail ride. Both of them loved it!
Everything from booking the ride through to dismount was easy and professional. Staff are very friendly and took the time to explain to each of my nieces (7 and 10, inexperienced riders) what to do and how to handle the horse if needed (when they wanted to eat leaves : ). The horses we rode - Gizmo, Ollie, Spirit and Willie - were calm and well behaved. The staff we met - Ron (the owner), Becca, Allison and Haylee were very friendly, knowledgable and went out of their way to make sure we had great pictures. Allison and Haylee were our guides on the ride - thanks to both of you for making our rides fun! Haylee made sure, when I brought my other niece, to take us on a different set of trails which was much appreciated! Overall a wonderful experience!

Lehigh Tannery Historic Site

Reviewed By robcurtross - New York City, New York

he old Lehigh Tannery can be found on Tannery Road at the Hickory Run State Park. It is easy to pass the pull-off because there are so many places to pull over and explore along the road, and because the upper half of the old building is long gone. All that remains is the base skeleton of what was once a huge building.

Steeped in the history of the Carbon County and White Haven area, the Lehigh Tannery is still a stopping place for many visitors who are fascinated with the historical value of a once booming region.

Lehigh Tannery was the largest tannery in the United States, from 1860 to 1874. At its peak, it produced 80,000 hides each year. bark from both of these trees was essential to tanning the leather hides. Men, called peelers, went into the forests each day to skin the bark off of these threes to take back to the tannery.

A village sprang up around the Lehigh Tannery and was aptly named after it. Old newspapers report on teachers chosen to teach at the Lehigh Tannery school and who was appointed to run the Lehigh Tannery post office (established in 1866) that can still be found at Hickory Run State Park. It is estimated that over 100 families lived in the area and worked for the tannery, the ice house, and other small industries that popped up to support what was then a growing village.

The Lehigh Tannery experienced two fires. The first happened in 1865 and the tannery had to be rebuilt. The second fire occurred in 1874. The building was burned down to the foundation and was never rebuilt because so much of the surrounding trees were destroyed and the short supply for hemlock and white oak bark was not enough to run a profitable tannery any longer.
